India's double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker is preparing for another important challenge, this time away from the shooting range. The 24-year-old has been nominated for the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Athletes Committee elections for the 2026-2030 term, where she will contest in the Pistol category.
One of 10 candidates competing for two positions in the discipline, Manu wants to use her experience as an elite international shooter to bring greater athlete representation and improve the overall environment of the sport.
Her proposed agenda covers several important areas, including competition regulations, financial opportunities, mental health support and career security. One of her major priorities is protecting the Men's
25m Rapid Fire Pistol event and ensuring its continued presence in the Olympic programme. She also wants greater consistency in technical regulations across Olympic cycles so that shooters can prepare without frequent changes.
Manu is additionally pushing for improved prize money at ISSF World Cups and better commercial opportunities through television-friendly competition formats. She believes digital platforms and social media can also help shooting attract younger audiences and expand its international reach.
Athlete welfare is another major part of her vision. The Indian shooter wants a confidential grievance redressal system, stronger sports psychology support and designated quiet zones at international competitions. She has also highlighted the importance of financial planning and career-transition opportunities for athletes after retirement.
Speaking about her nomination, Manu said, "It is an honour to be nominated for the ISSF Athletes Committee. Having competed at the highest level, I have experienced first-hand both the opportunities and challenges that come with being an international athlete. I believe that athletes should not just be participants in the sport but also active voices in shaping its future. My vision is to work towards greater stability in competition rules, better financial and commercial opportunities, stronger athlete welfare systems and a more accessible platform for athletes to raise their concerns. I want to contribute towards building an environment where athletes feel heard, supported and secure, both during and beyond their sporting careers. "
The elections will be conducted during the ISSF World Championships in Cairo (October 17-19) and Doha (November 3-13), with eligible athletes aged 18 and above able to vote.
