Paris Saint-Germain defeated Bayern Munich 5-4 in a wild Champions League semi-final first leg at the Parc des Princes, setting a new goals record for this stage, as both attacks delivered ruthless finishing and left the tie finely balanced ahead of the return meeting in Munich next week.
By the 58th minute, PSG had surged from 1-0 down to lead 5-2, yet Bayern responded with two quick goals to cut the deficit, ensuring the reigning European champions still carried hope despite a dramatic, high-scoring contest in the French capital.
The previous highest tally in a single Champions League semi-final game was seven goals, but this encounter produced nine from only 22 shots, meaning 40.1% of all attempts ended in the net, while it also became the first
European semi-final in any competition where both teams scored at least four goals.
Statistically, Bayern created the better chances with 2.51 expected goals compared to PSG’s 1.91, yet PSG were more ruthless in front of goal, underlining the clinical nature of the hosts, while the visitors’ attacking trio continued a prolific season despite the defeat.
Bayern’s front three of Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz have now reached 100 goals in all competitions this term, and each member of that line has also produced at least 10 goal involvements in the 2025-26 Champions League campaign.
The match opened at full throttle as Alphonso Davies made a crucial early clearance for Bayern, who then broke at pace and won a penalty when Luis Diaz was brought down by Willian Pacho, allowing Kane to step up under pressure.
Kane calmly sent Matvey Safonov the wrong way from the spot to equal Robert Lewandowski’s Bayern record of scoring in five consecutive Champions League knockout matches, before the England captain slipped Olise through on goal, only for Safonov to produce an important save.

PSG punished that miss in the 24th minute, shortly after Ousmane Dembele shot wide when one-on-one with Manuel Neuer, as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cut in from the left and curled a precise low finish into the bottom-right corner to level the score.
Olise then had a low cutback saved onto the post at the opposite end and Desire Doue saw a strike deflected wide, and from the resulting corner, Joao Neves rose highest to head PSG into the lead, turning the momentum towards the hosts.
Bayern equalised again in the 41st minute when Olise finished superbly at the end of a weaving run, but PSG still went into the break ahead as Dembele converted a penalty with the final kick of the first half after a VAR review judged Davies to have handled inside the area.
Champions League semi-final: PSG vs Bayern second-half goals
The second half continued at the same intense pace, with Konrad Laimer slicing wide from a promising position for Bayern, and that miss proved costly as PSG struck twice in two minutes to open a commanding three-goal cushion before the hour mark.
Kvaratskhelia grabbed PSG’s fourth by drilling in from Achraf Hakimi’s low cross, and Dembele soon added the fifth with a precise effort that went in off the left-hand post, extending the hosts’ lead to 5-2 and briefly silencing the Bayern support.
Bayern refused to fold, with Dayot Upamecano heading in from Joshua Kimmich’s teasing free-kick to make it 5-3, before Kane picked out Diaz, whose composed touch and finish were initially ruled offside but then awarded after another VAR check, pulling Bayern back to 5-4.
Late on, PSG substitute Senny Mayulu thundered a shot against the crossbar, and Kimmich saw a header cleared off the line as both teams continued to create chances, yet no further goals arrived, leaving a single-goal margin ahead of the second leg in Germany.
Champions League semi-final: PSG vs Bayern key stats and records
This tie surpassed Barcelona’s meeting with Inter from the previous season’s semi-finals, which many considered one of the best Champions League contests, and it also marked the first time since the 1994-95 season that Bayern conceded five goals in a European match, when they lost 5-2 to Ajax in another semi-final.
For PSG, this was another high-scoring outing in Europe, as the French side have now scored at least five goals in four different Champions League matches during the 2025-26 campaign, matching Liverpool’s 2017-18 record for the most such games in a single season.
PSG’s attacking output and Bayern’s chance creation together produced a contest that combined efficiency and drama, with nine goals, 22 total shots and both teams’ star forwards on the scoresheet, ensuring the second leg in Munich carries huge interest and tactical questions for both coaching staffs.

With PSG carrying a 5-4 advantage yet Bayern boasting strong underlying numbers and a front line already on 100 goals this season, the tie remains finely balanced, and the second leg in Munich is set up as another high-stakes Champions League semi-final showdown.
