Punjab Kings' chase of 220 against Sunrisers Hyderabad had momentum, pressure, and moments of doubt-but it was Shreyas Iyer's calculated aggression that ultimately defined the night. In a game that demanded both composure and authority, the PBKS skipper delivered a captain's knock that transformed a tense chase into a statement victory.
When Punjab slipped to 128/3 in the 11th over, the contest was delicately poised. The early fireworks from Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh had laid the foundation, but Sunrisers Hyderabad clawed back through timely breakthroughs from Shivang Kumar. With the required rate beginning to rise and Nehal Wadhera still settling in, the responsibility fell squarely on Iyer to anchor the chase.
What followed was a masterclass
in pacing an innings. Iyer did not rush early. Instead, he assessed conditions, rotated strike, and waited for the right bowlers to target. The shift came around the 12th over, when he began accelerating with authority-dispatching Nitish Kumar Reddy for a boundary and a six to release pressure and restore momentum. That over signalled intent.
From there, Iyer took control of the chase with calculated aggression. Against Harshal Patel, he hammered two towering sixes and a boundary in a single over, collecting 18 runs and bringing the equation firmly in Punjab's favour. His fifty came off just 24 balls, a milestone that reflected not just speed, but timing within the context of the chase.
Even as wickets fell around him-most notably Nehal Wadhera's dismissal at 197/4-Iyer remained composed. He continued striking boundaries at regular intervals and maintained a strike rate above 200, ensuring the chase never drifted back into SRH's control.
By the time Punjab needed just four runs from 12 balls, the contest was effectively settled. Iyer remained unbeaten on 69 off 33 balls, guiding PBKS to 223/4 and sealing a six-wicket victory with seven balls to spare.
More than the runs themselves, it was the game awareness that stood out. Iyer's ability to absorb pressure early and switch gears at decisive moments ensured that Punjab successfully chased down another 200-plus total-further strengthening their credentials as one of the most dangerous chasing sides this season.
After the match, Iyer credited the collective effort but acknowledged the importance of composure under pressure.
"We got a phenomenal start. It wasn't easy later, so I had to give myself some time, and thankfully it worked out," he said. "All of us came together, and we want to maintain the same rhythm going forward. "
Momentum Shift: Shashank Singh Double Strike Breaks SRH's Flying Start
Before Iyer's brilliance with the bat, Punjab Kings' comeback had already been set in motion by an unlikely hero with the ball.
Sunrisers Hyderabad were in complete control during the Powerplay. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head unleashed a relentless assault, racing to 105/0 in six overs-one of the fastest starts recorded in IPL history. At that stage, Punjab looked rattled, with bowlers struggling to find rhythm and SRH threatening to post an even bigger total.
That was when Iyer made a bold tactical move. Seeing his frontline bowlers under pressure, the PBKS captain handed the ball to part-time option Shashank Singh, a decision that initially appeared unconventional. But it proved decisive.
Shashank delivered instantly. In the space of three deliveries, he dismissed both openers-first Travis Head for 38, caught while attempting a big hit, and then Abhishek Sharma for a blistering 74 as he miscued a lofted shot to deep extra cover. The double strike halted SRH's momentum at 122/2 and brought Punjab roaring back into the contest.
Those wickets did more than break partnerships-they shifted belief.
From a position where SRH threatened to post an unassailable total, Punjab regained control and restricted them to 219/6-still imposing, but manageable on a batting-friendly surface.
Fittingly, Shashank remained involved until the very end, returning to finish the chase by hitting the winning run. His contribution with both ball and bat underlined the depth and flexibility in Punjab's setup.
Why These Moments Defined the Match
Punjab Kings' victory was built on two decisive phases: Shashank Singh's unexpected intervention with the ball and Shreyas Iyer's calculated authority with the bat.
The former prevented SRH from running away with the game; the latter ensured Punjab never lost grip of the chase.
Together, those moments turned what began as a daunting pursuit into a controlled and confident victory-one that reaffirmed Punjab Kings' growing reputation as one of the most resilient chasing sides in IPL 2026.
