Inter's head coach, Cristian Chivu, expressed his belief that a draw would have been a fair outcome after Inter's narrow 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League. Dominik Szoboszlai scored a late
penalty at San Siro after Alessandro Bastoni was penalised for fouling Florian Wirtz. This defeat marked Inter's first home loss in the Champions League since September 2022, ending an 18-game unbeaten streak.
Chivu was particularly disappointed with the manner of the defeat, especially after a similar late loss to Atletico Madrid in their previous Champions League match. He told Sky Sport Italia, "A draw was the right result considering how the game was going. " The team struggled with energy levels in the first half but managed to find ways to challenge Liverpool later on. However, forced substitutions limited their options for further changes.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Inter's midfielder, echoed Chivu's sentiments about the penalty decision being incorrect. He stated to Amazon Prime, "I think it was a balanced game, no one deserved to win tonight. " Mkhitaryan questioned the penalty call and expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. He added that if such penalties are given, then every contact in the box could be considered a foul.
Despite these challenges, Chivu noted that Inter fought hard and tried their best until the end. They managed to disrupt Liverpool's pressing game but ultimately fell short due to limited substitutions and energy constraints. The penalty incident was particularly frustrating as it mirrored their recent experiences in Europe.
Inter's recent history against Liverpool has been challenging, with half of their home defeats since the 2021-22 season coming against them. They also lost 0-2 to Liverpool in February 2022. This trend highlights ongoing difficulties when facing strong European opponents at home.

The match against Liverpool highlighted areas for improvement for Inter as they aim to regain their form in future fixtures. Despite setbacks, both Chivu and Mkhitaryan remain focused on addressing these issues and improving performance in upcoming matches.
