Liverpool face a summer of difficult choices after a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain ended their Champions League run and confirmed a trophyless 2025-26 season, with head coach Arne Slot stressing that future squad strengthening will depend on player sales.
Slot underlined that Liverpool operate under a clear financial model, pointing out that recent recruits arrived after a significant number of departures. The head coach expects the board to continue along similar lines, with outgoings required before any major incoming transfers can be completed in the next window.
The Champions League quarter-final tie was settled at Anfield, where Liverpool lost 2-0 on the night and 4-0 overall to Paris Saint-Germain, marking the first time Liverpool have
suffered five defeats in a single Champions League campaign and confirming that the holders will finish the season without adding another major trophy.
Liverpool produced 21 attempts on goal, their highest shot count in a Champions League match without scoring since they registered 24 efforts against Real Madrid in the 2022 final, but Ousmane Dembele converted both of Paris Saint-Germain’s key chances as the visitors capitalised on Liverpool’s missed opportunities.
Liverpool also generated 1.94 expected goals compared with Paris Saint-Germain’s three big chances to Liverpool’s two, and Slot highlighted that failure to convert promising openings has been a recurring theme throughout the campaign, as the team once again created sufficient opportunities but could not turn pressure into goals.
Last week was, of course, wastough and very difficult, but we showed in a week that we can improve a lot and it is a big compliment to the players that they showed how they could be. The players kept on going, even after going 1-0 down and that is a big compliment to them. If you look at expected goalswe should have scored two but didn't score one and that has happened far too often this season.
Liverpool Champions League setback and focus on qualification
[Qualifying for the Champions League] is what we have to play for now in the coming weeks, Slot told Amazon Prime. The good thing is Alex [Isak] is back, well able to make minutes. Much has been said that the club is in a transition. The club has sold eight or 10 players to make money to sign five or so very talented players. We have to sell to buy. We are losing some players on a free transfer. It is a big challenge in the summer but the club has shown this model works. As I said many times, the future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer.
(0-4 Agg) Liverpool produced a spirited second-half display, but PSG's first shot after the break (72nd minute) delivered a hammer blow. Liverpool Champions League squad overhaul and transfer window
Slot was heavily backed in the previous transfer window, when Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice to secure Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak and also invested considerably in Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, seeking to build on the Premier League title won in the preceding season.
The club also rewarded Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah with new lucrative contracts, although Mohamed Salah is scheduled to leave Liverpool at the end of this season, meaning key decisions will be needed on leadership and attacking structure once the current campaign ends.
Liverpool Champions League race and injury concerns
Liverpool must now reset quickly for a Merseyside derby against Everton this weekend, with both clubs chasing European qualification places, yet preparation has been complicated by a serious-looking injury to Hugo Ekitike, who left the pitch on a stretcher and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
This season we have [only been able to] playAlex, Florian and Hugo together for 88 minutes, Slot told reporters, as quoted by The Telegraph, referring to the attacking trio the Reds signed last summer. We got another 27 minutes [but now]I will be surprised if there are any more minutes this season.
Despite elimination from the Champions League and an empty trophy cabinet for 2025-26, Slot believes Liverpool can still end the season strongly by securing qualification for next year’s competition while planning a selective summer rebuild within a sell-to-buy model that has already reshaped the squad in significant areas.
