Thomas Tuchel is shaping an England World Cup squad built on character as much as skill. The head coach insists dressing-room unity will be vital. England qualified in flawless fashion and now move towards
March friendlies, when decisions on roles and personalities will become decisive.
Tuchel has led England since January 2024 and results have been strong. England won all eight World Cup qualifiers, scoring 22 goals and conceding none. The Three Lions now prepare to face Croatia, Panama and Ghana in the group stage, chasing a first title since 1966.
Tuchel has stressed that experience from past tournaments shapes his thinking on squad chemistry. He said: "When I speak to players who have been to World Cups, it has always made the difference when the connection was right, when the communication was right," he said. "When the players had the feeling that the right group was in the camp, that they knew their role, why they are in camp, what is expected of them, and they had the feeling that the tournament could even go on for another four weeks and they would be happy to be together.then they were successful. "
The coach explained that technical ability alone will not decide selection. Tuchel said: "It will be very important that we don't select just on talent, but also on what we need from a player. " He added: "It's about what a player'ssocial skills are.is he a good team-mate? Can he support if his role is maybe a supporting role?" Tuchel continued: "So, this is where the focus is. "
Tuchel has already shown bold choices in earlier squads. Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and an in-form Jack Grealish have been omitted. Jordan Henderson has returned, adding leadership and experience in midfield. Some critics questioned these calls, yet results in qualifying strengthened Tuchel’s position and underlined England’s depth.
England’s preparation now shifts towards key fixtures in March. The team will face Uruguay and Japan in friendly matches. Performances in those games will provide further evidence on combinations, leadership and adaptability. Tuchel will then finalise the England World Cup squad, blending established names with players suited to specific roles.
The international calendar for 2026 is already mapped out for England supporters and staff. A social media update from the national team highlighted the schedule, reinforcing how busy the year will be.

Tuchel wants players to embrace the stage, not just tolerate it. He said: "We need to find the right balance for the team and take it as an opportunity and take it as a dream coming true, to be part of a World Cup. " Tuchel added: "To play, hopefully, a major role, is nothing but a dream. " That ambition will guide the final shape of England’s World Cup squad.
