How the IPL Trade Process Works
While IPL trades are often discussed like simple player swaps, the reality is far more structured. The BCCI's IPL Player Regulations define a detailed multi-step process designed to protect both franchises and players. Here's a simplified explanation:
1. Expression of Interest (EOI)
When a franchise wants to acquire a player from another team, it must formally submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the BCCI. The BCCI then notifies the player's current franchise. That franchise has 48 hours to respond, confirming whether it is open to trade negotiations.
2. Player Consent
If both franchises agree, the player involved must sign a Consent Form, confirming his willingness to be traded. This form also includes details about any potential increase or decrease in his annual contract fee.
3. Negotiation and Fee Adjustment
Once the player consents, both teams negotiate the League Fee, essentially the player's salary. This can either be increased or decreased as part of the deal:
- Negotiated Increase: If the new team pays a higher fee, the increase is shared between the player and the selling franchise.
- Negotiated Decrease: If the new team pays less, the selling franchise compensates the difference for one season to ensure the player's earnings remain unchanged.
4. Overseas Players and NOC Requirement
If an overseas player is involved - like Sam Curran in this case, the buying franchise must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the player's national board, such as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
5. BCCI Approval
The final step involves BCCI approval. The governing body reviews all documents, consent forms, and financial details before officially announcing the trade. Until then, no trade is considered valid or binding.
Raina's Emotional Plea: "Keep Jadeja at CSK
The news of Jadeja's potential departure has sparked widespread debate among fans and former players. Suresh Raina, a CSK legend, urged the franchise to reconsider the move, highlighting Jadeja's immense contribution over the years. "Ravindra Jadeja should be retained again. He is a gun player for CSK. He has done really, really well for the team over the years, so 'Sir Ravindra Jadeja' has to be there, Raina - who is fondly called Chinna Thala by CSK fans, told official broadcasters Jio Hotstar.
What Happens Next?
With all three players having reportedly given their consent, the BCCI's verification process is now the final hurdle. If approved, the Jadeja-Curran-Samson swap could be officially announced within the next 48 hours, marking one of the biggest player movements ahead of IPL 2026.
The trade not only reshapes two major franchises but could also influence leadership dynamics, team balance, and fan sentiment going into the new season.
