Manchester United secured Champions League qualification with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool, as Kobbie Mainoo struck a late winner at Old Trafford. The result guaranteed a top-five Premier League finish and a return to UEFA’s main club competition, while leaving Liverpool still needing up to four more points to confirm their own place.
Mainoo’s composed finish into the bottom-left corner ended a 718-day Premier League scoring drought, having last netted against Newcastle United in May 2024. The midfielder has now scored more than once against Liverpool for United, after also finding the net in a 2-2 league draw in April 2024.
The victory completed United’s first Premier League double over Liverpool since the 2015-16 season. It also marked
only the second campaign in which Liverpool lost home and away to both Manchester clubs in the league, replicating a difficult run last seen in 1912-13.
Michael Carrick’s influence has been central to this shift. Carrick returned for a second stint as interim head coach after Ruben Amorim left in January, and United have since stabilised their league form. Under Carrick, the team have built momentum at Old Trafford and re-established belief in the squad.
Across Carrick’s two spells in charge, United have won eight of nine Premier League home matches, losing only once. That run makes Carrick the first English manager to win at least eight of an opening nine home games in the competition, and the first of any nationality since Antonio Conte achieved the same record with Chelsea in 2016-17.
Opta highlighted the statistic as Carrick entered a select group of managers to start so strongly at home. The data underlined how effective Old Trafford has become again, after a period of inconsistency earlier in the season under Amorim’s tenure.

Manchester United Premier League clash swings after early goals
The match itself opened at high speed, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko scoring within the first 14 minutes to give United a 2-0 advantage. Liverpool responded early in the second half through Dominik Szoboszlai, before Cody Gakpo capitalised on a poor error from Senne Lammens to make it 2-2.
With the contest level and tension rising, Mainoo produced the decisive moment. The England international arrived on the edge of the area and steered a precise shot into the bottom-left corner, restoring United’s lead and ultimately sealing Champions League football for next season.
Mainoo later explained how Carrick’s presence has shaped the dressing room. Asked whether Carrick had been the main influence, Mainoo told Sky Sports: "It's clearly a huge part. The confidence he has, not just in me, but all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him. That's what we showed. To turn it around the way we have done, it's a credit to the players and the manager. We are just looking forward and still need to finish the season strongly. We want to just keep on winning and winning. "
Mainoo’s journey this season has not been straightforward. Under Amorim, the midfielder was largely left out of the starting plans and faced a long spell without regular minutes. Throughout that period, Mainoo stayed convinced that form in training would eventually open another chance in the Premier League.
Reflecting on those months, Mainoo said: "It was difficult, of course, any time you're not playing football, Mainoo reflected. I just tried to look forward as much as possible, keep working hard and keep my head down to take things from it. I've not been around the goals too much, but I'm happy to be around it in this game! It's such a special occasion and a special fixture. "
The result strengthened United’s position in the league and underlined the impact of Carrick’s return on both team structure and individual players. Liverpool, meanwhile, remain close to securing their own Champions League place, needing no more than four additional points, while Mainoo’s performance reinforced a growing role in United’s future plans.
