Rajasthan Royals could be heading for a new home base next IPL season, with growing indications that the franchise is eyeing Pune as its potential venue.
Although the final decision rests with the BCCI,
the team has already initiated discussions with the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) regarding the Gahunje Stadium near Pune, as per reports from Cricbuzz.
A team from the Royals recently visited the city to evaluate the stadium facilities, hotels, transport links, and other logistical details.
The move stems from ongoing tensions between the franchise and the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). Relations reportedly soured after an RCA official accused the team of match-fixing last season, a charge the Royals vehemently rejected while demanding disciplinary action against the accuser.
If the arrangement with MCA is finalized, Pune is expected to host at least four of the Royals' home games, while the remaining matches may continue in Guwahati. But Royal Challengers Bengaluru have also Pune in their mind after Chinnaswamy Stadium was deemed unfit to host matches, and that can create an impasse.
Although nothing is confirmed yet, MyKhel understands the tension between the Rajasthan Cricket Association and the Royals has been growing. The franchise hasn't been at its best in recent times, with the departure of Rahul Dravid as head coach and then the subsequent move away for Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings. And the recent tension with RCA and a potential move away has further strained proceedings.
MyKhel understands the Royals are adamant to move away, as a source close to the proceedings told in condition of anonymity to protect relations.
"Yes, something serious is happening between them. Rajasthan Royals don't want to play in Jaipur and want to move away. But with the name Rajasthan in it, they are ought to play some matches in Jaipur," the source said.
With the season still around four months away, the decision will be taken soon. A clearer picture on the recent developments is expected to arrive after the IPL 2026 auction, which is slated to take place in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
