Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge extended a worrying Premier League slump, with six straight league losses leaving pressure on the squad. Joao Pedro stressed that Chelsea’s players must accept responsibility for the results, as Champions League qualification now looks far less likely.
The match featured more frustration for Chelsea. Cole Palmer missed a penalty, and Joao Pedro had an earlier effort ruled out, before finally ending Chelsea’s 634-minute scoreless run with an overhead kick in stoppage time. Forest had already gone 2-0 ahead inside 15 minutes, setting the tone.
This loss means Chelsea have suffered six consecutive league defeats for only the fourth time in their history, and the first time since October
and November 1993. Their top-five Premier League target is now gone, although sixth place might still provide a Champions League route, depending on Aston Villa’s Europa League outcome.
Chelsea’s remaining schedule is demanding, with key Premier League fixtures and an FA Cup final still to come. They meet Liverpool next, then face Manchester City at Wembley, before league games against Tottenham and Sunderland. The team must respond fast to protect European hopes and salvage some momentum.
| Opponent | Competition | Stage |
|---|---|---|
| Liverpool | Premier League | League fixture |
| Manchester City | FA Cup | Final |
| Tottenham | Premier League | League fixture |
| Sunderland | Premier League | League fixture |
Joao Pedro did not shield the squad from criticism when speaking to Sky Sports after the Premier League defeat, stressing that the players, rather than the coach, must respond: "From the beginning, we conceded too early and against Forest it's difficult to change the game. I think we should do better. We need to find a way to try to not make these mistakes every game. We need to start to win games. This is the Premier League and if you concede too early after that it's very difficult to come back. Everyone needs to look at themselvesme included. We need to find a way to do better. I feel sorry for the fans. It's difficult because I don't think it's about the coach. It's about the players and it's on us to step up, me included. It's difficult to say something. We support the leaders [in the team]. We always talk to each other to find a way to win games. Last week we won [in the FA Cup] against Leeds [United], this week it didn't happen, we need to find a way to win. The motivation is always thereif we won we would be able to [qualify] for the Champions League. Now [it] will be more difficult, but we need to still fight for every game and for every point and see what we can achieve. "
Joao Pedro’s words underlined a belief that Chelsea’s problems sit mainly with the squad, not the staff. The forward highlighted repeated defensive mistakes, the need for stronger leadership in the dressing room, and a duty to the supporters, especially after recent FA Cup progress against Leeds United contrasted with league setbacks.
There was at least one promising moment for Chelsea before events turned again. Academy product Jesse Derry impressed on debut in the first half, offering bright movement in attack. However, a clash of heads with Zach Abbott led to a penalty award, which Palmer failed to convert, and Derry had to leave the pitch with a head injury.
Chelsea later confirmed that Jesse Derry went to hospital for assessment, while interim head coach Calum McFarlane shared the initial update. "The update is that he is in a good condition," McFarlane said. "I need to fully speak to the medical team, but it's positive signs. " Chelsea will continue to monitor Derry after the Nottingham Forest match.
Forest’s fast start added another statistic to Chelsea’s difficult Premier League run. Going 2-0 down after 15 minutes made this the third earliest time a visiting side had led by two goals at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League game, after Manchester United did so in October 1995 after nine minutes and again in October 2012 after 12 minutes.

The Opta Analyst data also highlighted that Chelsea have now lost four consecutive home league matches for only the second time, matching a streak from August and September 1978. Combined with their wider six-game Premier League losing run, the numbers show the scale of the task facing Chelsea’s squad.
Chelsea now enter a decisive spell which could still shape the season, both in the Premier League and the Champions League race. With difficult fixtures and an FA Cup final ahead, Joao Pedro’s call for responsibility leaves the focus squarely on the players to respond and stabilise results.
