Cricket Australia has confirmed that its players will continue featuring in the Indian Premier League despite the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan overlapping with the tournament's playoffs.
The clarification comes after the Pakistan Cricket Board and Cricket Australia jointly announced a three-match ODI series scheduled for May 30, June 2 and June 4.
However, with the IPL 2026 final set to take place on May 31 in Ahmedabad, several Australian stars are now expected to remain in India until their IPL commitments are completed.
A Cricket Australia spokesperson confirmed the situation to Cricbuzz, stating that Australian players "will still be in the IPL and will complete their commitments. "
IPL playoffs to overlap with Australia's Pakistan tour
The IPL 2026 league stage concludes on May 24, while
the playoffs begin on May 26 before ending with the final on May 31.
At the same time, Australia's ODI tour of Pakistan begins on May 30 in Rawalpindi.
That overlap means players whose IPL franchises qualify for the playoffs are unlikely to join the national squad immediately.
Several Australian players are currently representing teams strongly placed in the IPL standings, making late arrivals increasingly likely.
Which Australian players are currently playing in IPL 2026?
More than 10 Australian players are currently involved in IPL 2026 across multiple franchises.
These include:
- Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
- Travis Head (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
- Josh Hazlewood (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
- Tim David (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
- Marcus Stoinis (Punjab Kings)
- Mitchell Marsh (Lucknow Super Giants)
- Josh Inglis (Lucknow Super Giants)
- Mitchell Starc (Delhi Capitals)
- Cameron Green (Kolkata Knight Riders)
- Xavier Bartlett (Punjab Kings)
- Cooper Connolly (Punjab Kings)
- Matthew Short (Chennai Super Kings)
Among those, Cummins, Head and Hazlewood are currently part of teams positioned inside the IPL top four.
Some Australian players could still arrive in time for first ODI
Not every Australian player is expected to miss the opening ODI.
Lucknow Super Giants are currently struggling near the bottom of the table after six straight defeats, meaning Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis could potentially leave India before the playoffs begin.
Similarly, Cameron Green's Kolkata Knight Riders are also outside the playoff spots at the moment.
Those players could join Australia's squad earlier than teammates involved in the IPL knockouts.
Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood may skip the tour entirely
According to reports, several senior Australian fast bowlers may not feature in either the Pakistan or Bangladesh white-ball tours.
That list reportedly includes:
- Pat Cummins
- Josh Hazlewood
- Mitchell Starc
The trio are instead expected to prioritise workload management and preparation for Australia's upcoming Test commitments later in the year.
Travis Head could also follow a similar path after a busy all-format schedule.
Australia's Pakistan tour begins before IPL 2026 final
Australia's ODI series schedule against Pakistan is as follows:
| Match | Date | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 1st ODI | May 30, 2026 | Rawalpindi |
| 2nd ODI | June 2, 2026 | Lahore |
| 3rd ODI | June 4, 2026 | Lahore |
The ODI series will then be followed by Australia's limited-overs tour of Bangladesh later in June.
IPL franchises could influence Australia's ODI squad availability
The situation once again highlights the growing scheduling challenges between international cricket and franchise leagues.
With the IPL remaining cricket's biggest T20 competition financially and commercially, national boards increasingly face difficult balancing acts regarding player availability during overlapping windows.
For now, Cricket Australia has made its stance clear - players involved in the IPL playoffs will complete their franchise commitments before linking up with the national side.
