Glasgow, July 31: Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage was already being spoken about as the next big name in world javelin long before the Commonwealth Games 2026 began. On Thursday (July 31) night, the 23-year-old Sri Lankan ensured the athletics world would remember his name.
With a stunning throw of 89.75m, to win the men's javelin gold at the Commonwealth Games 2026, becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal. It was also an all-Asian podium, with Neeraj taking silver and India's Yash Vir Singh claiming bronze.
Pathirage entered 2026 as one of the world's most consistent throwers. He began the year by winning the Perth Track Classic before breaking the Sri Lankan national record with 89.37m in March. A month
later, he threw 89.28m to win the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya.
His defining moment came at the Rome Diamond League, where he became the only athlete in the world this season so far to breach the 90-metre mark, launching a sensational 92.62m throw to announce himself as a genuine global title contender.
The Sri Lankan followed it up by winning the Ostrava Golden Spike and the Doha Diamond League before arriving in Glasgow as arguably the most in-form javelin thrower in the Commonwealth.
Cricket's Loss, Athletics' Gain
Ironically, Pathirage wasn't supposed to become a javelin star. Growing up in Kalutara, he initially pursued cricket as a fast bowler and was clocking good speeds during his school days at St. Peter's College.
But his father, himself a former discus and shot put athlete, encouraged him to try the throwing events. Pathirage first experimented with discus before eventually taking up the javelin in 2017.
That decision transformed his sporting career. He finished seventh at the 2022 World U20 Championships before steadily climbing the senior ranks. In 2025, he became the first Sri Lankan men's javelin thrower to qualify for a World Championships final, eventually finishing seventh.
The Australian Connection
Much of Pathirage's rise has come under the guidance of renowned Australian coaches Mike and Kelsey Barber at the Queensland Institute of Sport. The exposure to international training environments has helped refine his technique while significantly improving his consistency-something evident throughout the 2026 season.
Unlike many elite throwers who produce one or two standout performances, Pathirage has regularly crossed 88 metres this year, making him one of the most reliable athletes on the Diamond League circuit.
James Hillier Saw It Coming
Even before the Commonwealth Games began, India's national sprint coach James Hillier had identified Pathirage as the athlete to beat. Speaking exclusively to myKhel ahead of the Games, Hillier pointed out that the Sri Lankan's extraordinary consistency made him the biggest threat in Glasgow.
"He's been incredibly consistent this year. Once you throw over 90 metres, your confidence changes completely. He's going to be very difficult to beat. "
Those words proved prophetic.
While much of the pre-event focus centred around the latest chapter of the Neeraj Chopra-Arshad Nadeem rivalry, it was Pathirage who dominated the competition from his second-round throw of 89.75m, a mark none of his rivals could approach.
A New Asian Rivalry
For years, Asian men's javelin revolved around Chopra and Nadeem. Glasgow may has marked the beginning of a new chapter. With Pathirage now owning the season's best throw (92.62m) and a Commonwealth Games gold medal, the Sri Lankan has emerged as perhaps the biggest obstacle between Chopra and another major title.
The rivalry is set to resume in a few months at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where three of Asia's biggest javelin stars are expected to battle once again.
If Glasgow was any indication, Pathirage will arrive not as an underdog, but as the man everyone else must chase.
