Lucknow Super Giants are set to replace Sri Lanka legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga after the all-rounder was ruled out of IPL 2026 due to injury, with the franchise expected to announce a replacement within the next 24 to 48 hours. Director of cricket Tom Moody confirmed the development during LSG's fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders, indicating that the team has already begun preparing for his continued absence.
Hasaranga had been unavailable since sustaining a left hamstring injury during Sri Lanka's opening match of the T20 World Cup in February. The injury prevented him from joining the LSG squad at the start of the tournament, leaving the franchise without one of their primary spin options early in the season.
Fitness Clearance Issues Confirm Extended Absence
The situation was further complicated
by Hasaranga's inability to complete mandatory fitness assessments under Sri Lanka Cricket's supervision. These tests were required to obtain the No Objection Certificate (NOC) necessary to participate in the IPL.
Having been signed by LSG for INR 2 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, Hasaranga was expected to add balance to the bowling unit with his leg-spin and lower-order batting. However, his prolonged recovery timeline ultimately forced the franchise to move toward naming a replacement.
South African left-arm spinner George Linde is understood to be the leading candidate to replace Hasaranga. If confirmed, it would mark Linde's first stint in the IPL, despite his prior experience across multiple T20 leagues globally.
LSG Spin Unit Holds Firm Despite Absence
Despite Hasaranga's unavailability, LSG's bowling attack has remained competitive in the early stages of IPL 2026. The spin department has been managed by Digvesh Rathi, M Siddharth, and Shahbaz Ahmed, who have collectively handled middle-overs responsibilities with consistency.
The team has also dealt with availability concerns in the pace department, with fast bowler Mohsin Khan sidelined after experiencing stiffness following the opening match. These absences have required careful workload management across the bowling group.
Linde's Experience Across Leagues Adds Depth
George Linde brings considerable T20 experience, having featured in competitions such as SA20, the Hundred, Major League Cricket, and the Pakistan Super League over the past year. Across 250 T20 matches, he has claimed 218 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 7.42.
His recent appearances included the bilateral T20 series against New Zealand, where he featured in four matches. If confirmed as Hasaranga's replacement, Linde's left-arm spin could provide tactical variety to LSG's bowling plans, particularly on surfaces offering assistance to slower bowlers.
With IPL 2026 moving into a tightly scheduled phase, LSG are expected to finalise their replacement choice shortly to maintain squad balance. The franchise's ability to adapt to Hasaranga's absence while sustaining bowling effectiveness will remain a key factor in their campaign progression.
