IPL 2026 Auction: The IPL 2026 mini-auction, scheduled for December 16 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, is set to be a pivotal event despite its seemingly modest label. This will be the third instance
of an IPL auction being staged outside India, and the setting itself underlines the growing global footprint of the league.
More importantly, the auction arrives at a time when several franchises are looking to reset and rethink their strategies after mixed returns in the previous season.
A total of 359 players - spanning established international stars and emerging domestic prospects - are set to go under the hammer, with the 10 franchises collectively able to fill up to 77 slots. Squad balance, overseas combinations and prudent financial planning are expected to dominate decision-making, making this auction a crucial building block for the 2026 campaign. While the overall player pool reportedly includes close to 378 names, competition will be fierce given the limited number of available positions.
IPL 2026 Auction So Far
After an intense bidding war between CSK and KKR, Cameron Green goes to Kolkata for a whopping 25.2 crores. The likes of Devon Conway, Jake Fraser McGurk, Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan didn't find any team.
All eyes were on Venkatesh Iyer before the auction. For a moment it looked like that he would won't get any team and then multiple teams came in for him. The bidding war was between RCB and KKR, where the former emerged victorious by lapping up the ex KKR man for a price of 7 crores.
At the franchise level, contrasting approaches are expected. Mumbai Indians, armed with the smallest purse, and Punjab Kings, with limited vacancies, may adopt a conservative stance. In contrast, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to dominate proceedings. Together, they control over 40 per cent of the total auction purse and are expected to be aggressive after disappointing IPL 2025 outings.
