Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, stretching a concerning Premier League away run and leaving Eddie Howe frustrated. Despite long spells of control and strong pressure after half-time, Patrick Dorgu’s first-half volley proved decisive as Newcastle United’s late push failed to produce an equaliser.
The result means Newcastle United have now claimed only one win from their last 12 Premier League away fixtures. During that sequence, Howe’s team have drawn four and lost seven, collecting just seven points. Over the same period, only bottom side Wolves have picked up fewer away points, with four.
Newcastle United dominated possession at Old Trafford, enjoying around two-thirds of the ball and attempting 16
shots. Lewis Hall struck the crossbar from distance, while several other efforts went close. Manchester United, however, protected Dorgu’s first-half strike, leaving Newcastle United without a goal despite sustained territory and pressure.
Key match statistics from the Premier League meeting between Manchester United and Newcastle United at Old Trafford are shown below.
Eddie Howe felt the second-half display from Newcastle United showed clear improvement, yet still fell short of the required standard in the final third. "The second half was a lot better than the first, but we didn't do enough. We had to do more, the Newcastle boss told Sky Sports. It wasn't through a lack of effort, I thought we were very dominant in that second period. It was just the goal that was missing. I felt, if we scored, we could go on and win the game, but it didn't happen. We're hugely disappointed. "
Howe reflected on how the match shifted after Patrick Dorgu’s volley put Manchester United ahead in the first half. "I thought we started the game really well for the first 15 or 20 minutes, but I think we were slightly rocked by the goal. I don't think we responded well to that moment. I was a bit disappointed at half-time with our inability to grab control of the game. I thought it was there for us to take. "
Newcastle United’s support at Old Trafford remained vocal throughout the Premier League contest, something the club acknowledged after the final whistle.

Anthony Gordon had two of Newcastle United’s best Premier League opportunities. One close-range attempt rolled narrowly wide of the far post, while another chance after a neat move flew over the bar. Gordon has not scored an away league goal since the 2-1 win at Tottenham on January 4, but Howe offered clear backing.
"I thought he was probably our brightest player in attack, the Magpies head coach added of Gordon.I thought he played well. He was direct, full of running. I was pleased with his individual performance. Yes, the goal wasn't there, but we need more goalmouth creation and action, and to be more clinical. "
Newcastle United Premier League tactics and missed chances against Manchester United
Howe rejected any claims that Newcastle United’s Premier League defeat to Manchester United stemmed from tactical faults. "I don't think there was a tactical problem for us at any stage of the game. We're disappointed with our actions in terms of trying to score and that final finish. We put a lot of balls in their box. The chances were there. If we'd scored that equalising goal, that whole momentum shift would have been with us. But it wasn't to be. "
Across the full Premier League contest, Newcastle United produced pressure, territory and volume of attacks, yet lacked a decisive touch inside the area. Howe’s comments underlined belief in the general approach but highlighted a need for sharper finishing and greater composure in away matches, as the poor run on the road continues.
