Football fans wondering what happened to the brilliant Brazilian playmaker Oscar finally have their answer. The former Chelsea midfielder has officially retired from football at the age of 34, just months after being diagnosed with a fainting issue.
The sudden end to his playing days comes from a scary incident late last year. While playing for the Brazilian side Sao Paulo, Oscar was admitted to the hospital in November. Doctors diagnosed the midfielder with vasovagal syncope. According to the British National Health Service, this is a common type of fainting condition caused by a sudden drop in a person's heart rate and blood pressure.
Because of the diagnosis, Oscar on Saturday, announced that he had mutually agreed to terminate his contract
two years early and step away from the sport. It was a heartbreaking early exit, especially since he had just joined Sao Paulo in January 2025, registering two goals and five assists across 21 appearances.
In an emotional public statement, the Brazilian expressed his regret that he couldn't finish his contract. "I wanted to do more for Sao Paulo, I wanted to play more," he admitted. "I think I had both the footballing ability and the age to play more, but unfortunately this happened".
While his time on the pitch is over, his love for the game remains intact. "Now I'm going to retire and continue supporting Sao Paulo, continuing my life as a fan," he said, reflecting on a journey that took him all over the globe. "I'd like to thank everyone for their constant support, all the Sao Paulo fans who have backed me since my return and during this difficult time I'm going through".
