Ex Bangladesh captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) vice-president Faruque Ahmed has been admitted to a hospital in Dhaka after suffering a cardiac arrest on Sunday.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, Faruque experienced severe chest pain around noon and was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment. Doctors conducted an angiogram and discovered a blockage in one of his arteries, following which a stent was inserted later in the evening. He is currently being monitored in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
"He was feeling unwell since last night. This afternoon, he was taken to hospital. After an angiogram, a blockage was found in his heart, and doctors inserted a ring in the evening. Now he is in the CCU," a BCB official told
Daily Sun.
Faruque, who was a central figure in Bangladesh cricket's early years, represented the national side from 1984 to 1999, even leading the team during his playing career. Following his retirement, he continued to serve the game in an administrative capacity, working twice as a national selector and playing a key role in shaping the country's cricketing structure.
His leadership extended beyond team selection. In August 2024, Faruque assumed charge as the interim BCB president after the resignation of Nazmul Hassan. He served in that position for nine months before being succeeded by Aminul Islam Bulbul, who now heads the board.
Later that year, during the October 2024 BCB elections, Faruque was elected under the club category and subsequently became one of the board's vice-presidents under Aminul's administration.
Known for his deep understanding of the game and outspoken views on cricket development, Faruque remains a respected figure in Bangladesh's cricketing circles. His sudden health emergency has drawn concern and support from former teammates, officials, and fans across the country.
Hospital sources have confirmed that his condition is stable, though he will continue to remain under observation for the next few days as part of standard post-procedure care.
