Ayush Badoni's maiden India call-up has sparked widespread surprise and debate among fans after the Lucknow Super Giants batter was named as Washington Sundar's replacement for the remainder of the ODI
series against New Zealand.
With Sundar ruled out due to a side strain, many expected the selectors to opt for a like-for-like all-rounder-yet the choice of Badoni has raised more questions than answers.
While Sundar is a bowling all-rounder who provides control with the ball, Badoni is primarily recognized for his middle-order batting, offering only occasional off-breaks. However, the team management appears to have identified a specific value in his skill set: a batter capable of playing at No. 5 or No. 6 while potentially contributing a few overs of spin in the middle phase-something India has been exploring in recent months.
Still, fans on social media struggled to digest the decision, pointing to several alternatives who seemed more suited to the role. Axar Patel, a proven international performer, was widely considered the most natural replacement. Others backed in-form batters like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sarfaraz Khan, both enjoying prolific runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. RR star Riyan Parag, too, was seen as a strong contender-especially given his limited opportunities at the international level.
Here's how fans reacted on Twitter (X):
"How in this world Ayush Badoni can get India call up...!", a fan reacted to the news.

isn't Sarfaraz Khan deserves the place first ? Gambhir seriously has problem with SK.
"Why Axar isn't in the squad? He performed well for India and scored hundreds in VHT. Don't know what the selectors are cooking'', another user expressed.
So they have dropped Ruturaj Gaikwad from the team for Ayush Badoni.

''India A feeder system at work here. Ayush Badoni had a terrific second half of 2025 getting callups for every competition and series. He's below Riyan Parag in the pecking order I feel but since Parag isn't fit, Badoni gets a call up'', an X user feels Badoni is a better choice than Parag.
Badoni's selection comes shortly after he featured for India A against South Africa A in the unofficial ODIs, scoring a notable 66 in the third match-the only time he batted. However, his current Vijay Hazare Trophy form has been underwhelming, with just 15 runs in five games.
With opinions sharply divided, the spotlight will now shift to how India utilize Badoni-and whether this bold call pays off in the ongoing series.
