Joao Pedro says the disappointment of missing Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad has not shaken focus or calm. Carlo Ancelotti confirmed a 26-player list on 18 May 2026, which includes Neymar’s return. However, the Chelsea forward was not selected, despite a strong season in England and growing expectations around international recognition.
Ancelotti’s announcement also detailed which attackers moved ahead of Joao Pedro in the pecking order. The coach chose Neymar, Raphinha, Vinicius Junior, Matheus Cunha, Rayan, Endrick, Gabriel Martinelli, Igor Thiago and Luiz Henrique. Those decisions underline the intense competition for forward places as Brazil target a sixth world title in 2026.
The 24-year-old has played a central role for Chelsea during the
2025-26 campaign. Joao Pedro has been involved in 26 goals from 49 matches in all club competitions, excluding the Club World Cup. That form earned the Player of the Season award at Chelsea, highlighting status within the squad and consistency across domestic and European fixtures.
Across the Premier League, only two players have stronger combined goal and assist numbers in 2025-26. Erling Haaland has been involved in 46 goals, while Bruno Fernandes has 29 contributions. Joao Pedro sits behind that pair in the overall table, underlining why many observers expected a place in Brazil’s World Cup group.
Joao Pedro’s record for Brazil has been more modest than club performances. The forward did not score in five World Cup qualifying games. There were also no goals across two March friendlies. Those statistics, combined with Brazil’s wide attacking options, appear to have influenced Carlo Ancelotti’s final assessment of attacking roles.
Explaining the decision, Ancelotti pointed to differences between European and Brazilian conditions and schedules. Ancelotti told reporters: "I understand that they say that European football is different, more intense, but you have to consider a lot of things. To play here [in Brazil] is very difficult; you have a tight schedule, trips, the heat. Obviously, I am sad for Joao Pedro, who for the season he made in Europe probably deserved to be in this list, but sadly, with all the consciousness, respect, and competence, we chose other players. " The coach stressed respect for Joao Pedro’s season but underlined trust in the chosen 26.
Joao Pedro responded with a measured Instagram message, reflecting personal disappointment but also support for Brazil. Posting a statement on Instagram, Joao Pedro said: "I try to give my best at all times, but unfortunately, it wasnt possible to fulfil my dream of representing my country at a World Cup. But I remain calm and focused as I always try to be. Joy and frustrations are part of football and from now on, I wish good luck to everyone that is there and I will be another fan cheering for them to bring the sixth title home. " The message showed acceptance and backing for those selected.
The Brazilian Football Confederation post captured the official announcement mood as supporters assessed the final World Cup group and debated omissions such as Joao Pedro.CONVOCADOS! VAMOS FAZER HISTRIA JUNTOS! #BateNoPeito ISSOBRASIL! pic.twitter.com/EFaOm1oIeTbrasil (@CBF_Futebol) May 18, 2026
