Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has opted out of Mumbai's last two group-stage matches in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season due to personal reasons.
The 37-year-old informed the Mumbai Cricket Association of his decision ahead of the team selection on January 17, 2026.
Mumbai are scheduled to play their next away fixture against Hyderabad from January 22 to 25, followed by a home game against Delhi from January 29 to February 1. Rahane's absence will be a significant blow to the defending champions as they push for a strong finish in the group stage.
Rahane had stepped down as Mumbai captain in August 2025 to allow the team to groom a new leader for the future. Despite the change in role, he had reiterated his commitment to playing for Mumbai and
contributing to more titles. This season, he scored a notable century against Chhattisgarh in October, helping Mumbai post a strong total, though his overall form has been inconsistent.
The experienced batter, who once led India to a historic Test series victory in Australia, remains an important figure for the young Mumbai squad. His decision to step away for personal reasons has led to speculation about his immediate future in competitive cricket.
While the exact nature of the personal reasons has not been disclosed, the break may provide Rahane with much-needed time away from the game. Mumbai will now look to adjust their batting lineup and explore options among emerging talents to fill the void left by their senior player.
As team selection takes place today, all eyes will be on how the side adapts in this crucial phase of the tournament. Rahane's withdrawal aligns with his earlier comments about nurturing the next generation of Mumbai cricketers. The veteran India star is also likely to continue his role as Kolkata Knight Riders captain in the IPL 2026 season after he was retained by the Knight Riders.
Will Rahane continue as Expert?
Ajinkya Rahane was seen as an expert on a digital platform during the India vs New Zealand ODI series. It is to be seen if Rahane continues at his role for the upcoming T20I series between the two sides as well, which will overlap with the next phase of Ranji Trophy matches.
