Mumbai Indians have been forced into a mid-season squad change after wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini was ruled out of the remainder of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 due to injury.
With the tournament entering a decisive phase and only three league matches remaining, MI have signed left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma as her replacement.
Kamalini had been a regular feature in Mumbai's playing XI, appearing in all five matches this season. While her contributions with the bat were modest - 75 runs with a top score of 32 - her value extended beyond numbers. As the team's primary wicketkeeper, she played a key role behind the stumps, effecting several dismissals and providing stability in the field. The franchise has not disclosed details of her injury,
but her absence presents a tactical challenge for a side aiming to secure a playoff berth.
To address the vacancy, MI have opted for a different skill set by bringing in Vaishnavi Sharma for INR 30 lakh. The 20-year-old is a specialist left-arm orthodox spinner and does not offer wicketkeeping cover, indicating a potential reshuffle in Mumbai's on-field balance. However, her inclusion significantly strengthens the team's spin resources.
Vaishnavi rose to prominence after being part of India's title-winning ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup squad in 2025. Her rapid progression continued later that year when she made her senior international debut during the T20I series against Sri Lanka. In that series, she impressed with her control and temperament, picking up five wickets while maintaining an economical run rate.
Despite going unsold at the WPL mega auction, Vaishnavi's performances at both domestic and international levels have now earned her a long-awaited opportunity in the league. Mumbai Indians, who have lifted the WPL trophy twice, are currently placed second on the points table after winning two of their five matches.
As the business end of the season approaches, MI will be hoping Vaishnavi's inclusion adds variety and depth to their bowling attack. With Kamalini sidelined, the onus will be on the squad's adaptability as the defending champions aim to finish strong and advance to the playoffs.
