Glasgow: The stage was set for one of the toughest tests of endurance even before the starting gun was fired. Rain had lashed Glasgow for hours and showed little sign of relenting as athletics got underway at Scotstoun Stadium. By the time the men's 10,000m final began, the blue Mondo track had been under a steady downpour for most of the evening, while puddles had started forming around sections of the infield.
The weather had already disrupted the day's programme. The women's high jump competition was halted midway as officials waited for conditions to improve, with the continuous rain making it increasingly difficult for the event to proceed. The jumpers, however, at least had the opportunity to take shelter under the covered areas while they
waited for the competition to resume.
The distance runners enjoyed no such privilege. Once the gun went off, there was no respite. For 25 laps, they ran relentlessly through the rain with temperatures hovering around 16°C, far from ideal for a championship final. While the Mondo surface continued to provide reliable footing, the relentless rain, cold conditions and constant exposure tested the athletes' endurance, concentration and ability to maintain rhythm over 10,000 metres.
It was under these demanding conditions that India's current national record holder Gulveer Singh produced the finest race of his career.
The Uttar Pradesh athlete did not merely win silver, the first in the country's men's 10000m final at CWG. He outthought one of the strongest distance-running fields assembled at the Commonwealth Games to become the first Indian man ever to win a medal in the men's 10,000m. Kavita Raut was the first Indian to bag a 10000m bronze in CWG 2010 when she finished the podium at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
A Race Won Through Patience
Championship racing is fundamentally different from chasing fast times, they are often tactical battles. Every surge, every change of pace and every positional move has consequences. Gulveer understood that better when it mattered.
The Indian settled comfortably inside the leading group during the opening kilometres, refusing to get carried away by the frantic early pace. While several African runners - from Kenya and Uganda - took turns moving to the front, Gulveer quietly shadowed them, conserving energy without ever allowing the leaders to escape.

Around the halfway mark, Gulveer deliberately drifted away from the front of the pack. By the 6.8km mark, he had slipped to ninth, with Kenyan, Ugandan and Australian runners constantly exchanging the lead in an attempt to stretch the field.
For many athletes, dropping that far back in a championship final would have triggered panic. The instinct is often to respond immediately, burning precious energy in an attempt to regain lost ground.
Gulveer resisted that temptation. He recognised that the race had not truly begun yet.
With nearly three kilometres still to run, the leading pack remained tightly bunched, separated by only a few strides despite the frequent changes in position. Rather than reacting to every surge from the East African runners, Gulveer maintained an even rhythm, trusting both his fitness and the race plan he had prepared with coach Scott Simmons.
That patience soon began to pay dividends. As the relentless pace and difficult weather started taking a toll, several of the early leaders began to fade. Gulveer, who had carefully conserved energy through the middle stages, started picking them off one by one.
He moved from ninth to sixth by the 8km mark, held his position while continuing to close on the leaders, and by 9km had climbed back into third, placing himself firmly in medal contention before the bell lap.
The final kilometre showcased exactly why championship racing is as much about intelligence as endurance.
Australia's Ky Robinson launched his decisive move with just over a lap remaining, while the battle for silver intensified behind him. Gulveer immediately sensed the moment. Instead of chasing Robinson too early or waiting for the home straight, he gradually increased his pace over the back straight and entered the final 400 metres in second place.
The closing lap became a test of composure. Behind him, David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man mounted a strong challenge, while Robinson maintained a slender advantage up front. Gulveer never broke his rhythm. His stride remained controlled despite having already covered more than 9.5 kilometres in cold, wet conditions, and he refused to look back as Mullarkey closed in.
He crossed the line in 27:49.78, just 0.85 seconds behind Robinson (27:48.93) and 0.50 seconds ahead of Mullarkey (27:50.28), sealing India's first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the men's 10,000m.
It was not the fastest race Gulveer has ever run. It may well have been the smartest.
Beating Some of the World's Best
The medal becomes even more significant when viewed through the quality of athletes Gulveer defeated.
Behind him finished World Championships silver medallist Daniel Ebenyo, Kenyan star Edwin Kurgat, World Championships bronze medallist Oscar Chelimo, Uganda's Samuel Cherop, Scotland's Andrew Butchart and several elite runners who have dominated global distance running for years.
For decades, Indian long-distance runners have struggled to consistently compete against the traditional powerhouses from Kenya and Uganda at global championships.
Gulveer, as well as the Australian Ky Robinson, changed that narrative in Glasgow.
The Colorado Connection
The silver medal is the culmination of years of steady progress rather than one exceptional race. Over the last two seasons, Gulveer has transformed himself into India's premier distance runner, rewriting national records in the 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m and half marathon while establishing himself among Asia's best endurance athletes.
A significant part of that transformation has come through his training base in Colorado Springs, USA, where he works under renowned endurance coach Scott Simmons.
The high-altitude environment, elite training group and regular exposure to international competition have helped Gulveer bridge the gap between continental success and global competitiveness.
Speaking exclusively to myKhel from Glasgow after Gulveer's podium finish, Simmons believes the Indian has only begun to realise his potential. "Gulveer is competitive on the world stage. He's defeated some Olympic medallists here and he's beaten some Olympic medallists in the past as well. He takes it seriously and he'll do his best in the future. I think this is just the beginning," he said.
Simmons also pointed to the untapped potential of Indian distance running. He added further, "India has tremendous talent. What athletes need is consistent exposure-training and racing abroad against the world's best. That experience builds confidence, and confidence changes performances. "
Confidence Built Through Competition
Gulveer echoed his coach's thoughts after scripting history. The Indian believes regularly competing against elite international runners has completely altered his mindset.
Speaking to myKhel, he said racing alongside the world's best has removed the psychological barriers that often hold athletes back. Gulveer said, "When we compete with the best athletes, the fear goes away. We line up against the biggest names regularly now, and that gives us confidence. We also want to win medals. "
Asked about becoming the first Indian to medal in the Commonwealth Games 10,000m, Gulveer preferred to look ahead rather than dwell on history. "There is no loss, only benefit. Winning a medal feels really good. "
The understated response perfectly reflected the 26-year-old's personality.
More Than Just a Silver
The Glasgow medal represents far more than a place on the podium. It validates India's growing investment in long-distance running, highlights the importance of overseas training programmes and demonstrates that Indian athletes can compete tactically - not just physically - against the world's finest.
In many ways, Gulveer's biggest achievement was not his finishing time.
It was his decision-making.
He resisted the temptation to chase early leaders, ignored unnecessary surges, conserved energy when others spent theirs and delivered his fastest running when the medals were on the line.
That is the hallmark of a mature championship athlete.
With the Asian Games later this year and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics firmly on the horizon, Gulveer Singh's historic silver in Glasgow may ultimately be remembered not as the destination, but as the race that announced India had found a genuine world-class distance runner capable of matching the very best when it matters most.
