Mizoram's cricketing fraternity was left in profound shock on Wednesday after former Ranji Trophy cricketer Khawlhring Lalremruata passed away following a collapse during a local match.
The incident occurred
in the Khaled Memorial 2nd Division Screening Tournament, where Lalremruata was representing Venghnuai Raiders CC in a game against Chawnpui ILMOV CC.
According to witnesses, Lalremruata suddenly fell ill on the field. Immediate medical attention was provided, but despite the efforts of doctors, he could not be revived. His unexpected passing has deeply shaken the cricket community in the state.
Lalremruata, who had represented Mizoram in domestic cricket, remained closely connected with the sport long after his playing days. He was serving as a member of the Senior Tournament Committee, contributing significantly to the organisation and smooth conduct of local competitions. Colleagues remembered him as a committed figure who preferred to work quietly behind the scenes, always placing the needs of the sport first.
Describing him as a selfless worker, officials said he consistently offered his services without seeking recognition. Many fellow cricketers expressed their grief, recalling his passion for the game and his dedication to developing cricket at the grassroots level. His absence, they noted, would be deeply felt across Mizoram's cricket structure.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Cricket Association of Mizoram immediately cancelled all scheduled matches, announcing that they would be rescheduled at a later date. The association expressed sorrow over the loss and acknowledged Lalremruata's invaluable contributions to cricket in the state. In a message of condolence, the members of the association extended their sympathies to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the departed soul.
Players, officials, and members of the wider cricketing community paid heartfelt tributes, remembering him not only as a former player but also as an "administrator who always put cricket above other interests. " His death marks a significant loss for Mizoram cricket, with many noting that the state has lost "one of its hard-working cricketers" whose guidance and commitment were crucial to nurturing young talent.
