New Delhi, Dec 11: Indian golf entered a new era on Wednesday as the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) announced 72 The League - the nation's first exclusive professional golf league - in partnership
with Game of Life Sports (GOLS).
Poised to become a landmark in India's sporting evolution, the league combines elite golf, city-based franchises, entertainment, and a transformative team-based format designed to propel the sport into the mainstream.
Backed by a consortium of seasoned investors, industry leaders and passionate sports visionaries, 72 The League will be supported by legendary golfing personalities who will mentor teams and shape the path for emerging athletes.
The inaugural season will bring together city-based franchises, each featuring 10 professional players, chosen through a transparent player auction scheduled for January 2026. Top performers from the PGTI circuit will headline the competition, making it one of the most competitive platforms ever assembled in Indian golf.
The first season will be held from 21 February to 6 March 2026, across three of Delhi NCR's premier golf venues - Classic Golf & Country Club, Jaypee Greens, and Qutab Golf Course - ensuring a world-class setting befitting the tournament's ambitions.
The governance structure brings together some of India's foremost minds in sports administration. Veteran sports administrator Amrit Mathur will serve as League Commissioner, supported by PGTI Board Member Amitabh Kant and GOLS Senior Advisor Joy Bhattacharjya, strengthening the league's operational and strategic foundation.
PGTI President Kapil Dev hailed the initiative as a monumental step for Indian golf. "With the launch of 72 The League, PGTI is turning over a new leaf for the growth of golf in India. For the first time, we have a structured, team-based national league that creates new opportunities for players. This is as exciting for us as it is for the players," he said, extending a warm welcome to partners Game of Life Sports.
The vision behind 72 The League extends beyond competition - it aims to blend golf with premium lifestyle experiences and elevate the sport's appeal. Co-Founder of GOLS Amit Kharabanda emphasised the ambition: "Our vision is to create top-notch golf properties that inspire and elevate the game. With 72 The League, we aim to deliver an incomparable format that combines elite competition with lifestyle and entertainment. "
The timing, stakeholders believe, is perfect. "Today we are ushering in a new era of Indian golf," said Commissioner Amrit Mathur, highlighting how league formats in other sports have built stars, increased fan engagement, and transformed sporting ecosystems.
Similarly, PGTI CEO Amandeep Johl called the launch the next chapter in India's golf evolution, building on rising tournament numbers, growing participation, and expanding prize money on the tour.
GOLS Co-Founder Samant Sikka added that rising interest in golf made this the ideal moment to democratize the sport and enhance its mass appeal.
Featuring a faster, high-impact match-play format, the league promises an immersive spectator experience. Fans can look forward to Pro-Am events, interactive fan zones, behind-the-scenes content, live entertainment and premium broadcast production - all crafted to connect new-age audiences with the sport like never before.
With its innovative framework, strong leadership and entertainment-driven approach, 72 The League is set to redefine Indian golf and shape its next generation of champions.
