The IPL trade window is a period before and after the player auction where franchises can exchange players via swaps or direct cash deals, aiming to strengthen their squads before each new season.
As the
IPL 2026 auction approaches, the teams have the opportunity to sign players from other franchises as they look to make additions to their side. The retentions are slated to be announced on November 15, but teams can continue their trade till a week before the mini auction, likely to be held on December 16.
Mumbai Indians have actively participated in the latest trading window, acquiring all-rounders Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants for INR 2 crore and Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans for INR 2.6 crore- both are all-cash deals.
When it comes to the Paltans, they are the undisputed frontrunners for trades. Over the years, MI have managed to rope in players in trade moves from across the franchises. In fact, the signing of Rutherford is their 18th trade deal in the IPL.
Mumbai Indians and their IPL Trades
MI's first-ever trade was Shikhar Dhawan, who was roped in from the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in 2009, along with two other players, Zaheer Khan from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Jaydev Shah from Rajasthan Royals.
Over the years, they have brought in players such as Quinton de Kock, Trent Boult in trade deals. But the biggest name who joined MI via trade was Hardik Pandya in 2024. Before the IPL 2024 auction, Hardik rejoined MI via a trade from Gujarat Titans and was named as the captain of the team. Former India U19 captain and now USA international Unmukt Chand was also brought in via trade in IPL 2015 from the Rajasthan Royals.
As Sherfane joins Mumbai in the IPL 2026 auction, the West Indies player becomes the first to be traded to the same IPL team twice. Rutherford was roped in from Delhi Capitals in 2020 by Mumbai Indians, and now he is set to switch from the Gujarat Titans.
