Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi recently underwent trials with Mumbai Indians (MI) in preparation for the IPL 2026 auction, signalling possible inclusion in their squad.
Nabi, 29, has experienced a rapid
rise, especially in red-ball cricket, where he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy with 44 wickets. He is currently maintaining a similar position in the ongoing season. Although Nabi's T20 statistics are modest with 28 wickets in 27 matches, averaging 26.39, his first-class record is impressive with 125 wickets from 36 matches.
As per reports, the Mumbai Indians trial took place at their Ghansoli facility, where Nabi showcased his potential to strengthen their pace bowling lineup. Nabi could be a cost-effective and promising player for MI, who have had their share of struggles in recent times.
The Jammu and Kashmir player has been in terrific form this year as well, and looks destined to find a team in the upcoming mini auction. Despite Nabi's lack of IPL experience-having never played in the league before-he was earlier a net bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad and also recently attended trials with Delhi Capitals.
While speaking with MyKhel in 2024, just after the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, Auqib was disappointed to not even have his name mentioned in the auction.
"Honestly, it feels disappointing. I've been performing consistently in the Ranji Trophy and other formats. This season, I've been among the leading wicket-takers as a fast bowler in India. Five wickets in five matches is not easy, especially for a pacer. It's disheartening when such performances go unnoticed. The name was not even mentioned. "
But fast forward a year, Auqib has emerged as a top prospect with his excellent bowling in the domestic circuit across formats. MI may hold an edge to buy him in the auction, but there are several other teams who will be lining up for Auqib Nabi.
Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals - all will be inclined to bring the J&K pacer to their side, who has been growing in leaps and bounds. KKR and CSK do have a massive purse going into the IPL 2026 auction, and after a long list of releases, they would be eyeing to bring in fresh blood ahead of the new season.
