Antony, formerly of Manchester United, was taken aback by Bayern Munich's interest during the summer transfer window. After a successful loan at Real Betis in the 2024-25 season, he joined them permanently
in September, ending his less impressive time at Old Trafford. During his loan, Antony played 26 matches for Betis, scoring nine goals and assisting five times across all competitions.
His impressive performance in LaLiga since January saw him involved in 22 goals. Only players like Fermin Lopez (23), Ferran Torres (25), Lamine Yamal (29), Raphinha (30), Julian Alvarez (32), and Kylian Mbappe (46) surpassed him in goal contributions. This form caught the attention of several European clubs, including Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich's interest was unexpected for Antony, especially after they lost Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane to Al-Nassr and Galatasaray. Vincent Kompany, Bayern's coach, was keen on strengthening his squad's wide areas. Antony was surprised by Kompany's approach and their conversation left a significant impact on him.
"I'm going to be completely honest. It really shook me up," Antony shared with Globo Esporte about Bayern's interest. "We're talking about a global giant, Bayern Munich, where a coach with that kind of history, Kompany, calls me. " He added that Kompany was very polite and expressed admiration for his football skills during their late-night conversation.
Despite the allure of joining Bayern Munich, Antony decided against moving to Bavaria due to family considerations. The 25-year-old has continued to excel at Betis this season with six goals and two assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. He has also created 17 chances for his teammates.
Among his Betis teammates, only Pablo Fornals and Giovani Lo Celso have created more opportunities with 23 each. Antony’s decision reflects his prioritisation of personal life over professional opportunities despite the prestige associated with Bayern Munich.
The Brazilian winger’s journey highlights how personal factors can influence career decisions even when prestigious clubs show interest. His choice underscores the importance of balancing professional aspirations with family commitments.
