Ipswich Town’s 2-2 draw at Southampton keeps the Championship promotion race alive and tense. The late equaliser preserves second place for the Tractor Boys, but automatic promotion is not confirmed. Southampton’s hopes of a top-two finish are over, and Russell Martin’s side must now prepare for the play-offs after missing a crucial chance.
The draw means Ipswich Town stay level on points with Millwall, yet retain a huge goal difference advantage. Middlesbrough sit one point further back and still have an outside chance. Ipswich Town must now beat Queens Park Rangers at home on Saturday to guarantee second place. Any slip would invite late drama from those chasing teams.
The closing stages at St Mary’s were frantic. Cyle Larin looked to have won
it for Southampton with 10 minutes left, finishing cleverly after Ryan Manning’s pass and sharp turn past Jacob Greaves and Leif Davis. Kasey McAteer then missed a major chance, but Jack Clarke struck in the 87th minute to rescue a point.
Clarke’s leveller came from a loose ball on the edge of the box, which dropped kindly. The winger smashed a volley that bounced into the far corner, beating Daniel Peretz. Clarke almost turned one point into three in stoppage time, first poking against the near post and later seeing a left-footed attempt pushed away by Peretz.
A win at St Mary’s would have put Ipswich Town three points clear of Millwall before the final round. Given Ipswich’s far superior goal difference, that lead would have left automatic promotion almost certain. Instead, Kieran McKenna’s team face pressure against QPR, knowing anything less than three points could allow Millwall or Middlesbrough to capitalise.
Southampton came into the match knowing only victory would keep automatic promotion alive. That urgency showed after they fell behind, as Leo Scienza bent one shot just beyond the top-right corner. Finn Azaz then rifled another effort past the left-hand post, with Ipswich Town struggling to contain the hosts’ spell of pressure.

Ipswich Town Championship promotion race turns after Burns opener
Earlier, Ipswich Town had taken control after a balanced first half. Both sides threatened before the break, with chances for Larin and Ivan Azon at opposite ends. Three minutes into the second half, high pressing from the visitors forced a turnover, Azon nudged the ball into Wes Burns’ path, and Burns drilled past Peretz with a powerful right-footed strike.
Southampton’s response was swift. Around 10 minutes later, Greaves tripped Azaz right on the edge of the box. Manning hit the resulting free-kick low, and the ball deflected off Marcelino Nunez. The touch wrong-footed Christian Walton and rolled past the goalkeeper’s outstretched leg, bringing the hosts level and shifting the game’s momentum.
Ipswich Town Championship promotion race statistics and xG
The numbers underline how open the contest was, with both attacks dangerous throughout. Ipswich Town registered 19 shots compared with Southampton’s 18. Ipswich also created the better shooting positions, edging the expected goals measure by 1.75 to 1.01, and produced more than double the efforts on target, nine to four.
This draw extends Ipswich Town’s unbeaten run in away league games at Southampton to six matches. Five of those visits have been drawn, alongside a 1-0 Ipswich win in September 2023. A single point was less than McKenna’s team targeted, yet it suits Ipswich more than Southampton, who now face the uncertainty of the play-offs while automatic promotion remains in Ipswich’s hands.
