Tamil Nadu's teenage sprinting sensation Neil Samraj is enjoying a phenomenal campaign at the ongoing National Junior Athletics Championships 2026, rewriting the Indian under-18 record books in spectacular fashion.
After setting a new national record in the men's U-18 100m, the 17-year-old has now broken the national record in the 200m, underlining his growing stature as one of India's most exciting young sprinters.
Neil clocked an outstanding 21.03 seconds in the men's U-18 200m, improving his previous personal best of 21.73 seconds by a remarkable 0.70 seconds at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
The performance also erased the previous national record of 21.06 seconds, set by Abhay Singh in 2023. In addition, Neil bettered Pratik Maharana's
meet record of 21.28 seconds.
The latest achievement adds another memorable chapter to a season in which the young sprinter has repeatedly raised the bar.
His ability to produce such a significant improvement in the 200m, alongside his impressive performances in the 100m, highlights his potential across both sprint distances.
Before making headlines in the 200m, Neil had already established himself as a standout performer in the men's U-18 100m.
At the ongoing Junior Nationals, he clocked 10.45 seconds to establish a new national record, improving on the 10.46 seconds he had recorded at the Indian U-18 Championships earlier in the season.
That improvement might appear marginal on paper, but at the highest level of sprinting, every hundredth of a second matters. Neil's latest performance demonstrated his continued progress and his determination to push beyond the limits he had set for himself.
His five fastest 100m performances reflect the consistency of his improvement:
- 10.45s - National Junior Athletics Championships 2026
- 10.46s - Indian U-18 Championships 2026
- 10.51s - National Junior Athletics Championships 2026, semifinals
- 10.53s - Indian U-18 Championships 2026, semifinals
- 10.56s - Indian Athletics Series 8, 2026
Remarkably, two of his five fastest performances have come at the ongoing Junior Nationals, further highlighting the form he has brought to Chennai.
Neil's rise this season has not been without challenges. Despite beginning the campaign while recovering from an injury, the Tamil Nadu sprinter gradually worked his way towards the performances he had been targeting.
He clocked 10.78 seconds at the Junior Federation Cup in April before improving to 10.59 seconds by June. Those performances marked important steps in his development as he continued to build his physical condition and confidence.
His progress gathered further momentum at the Indian U-18 Championships, where he brought his 100m time down to 10.46 seconds. He then improved to 10.45 seconds at the Junior Nationals, continuing his upward trajectory.
Now, with national records in both the 100m and 200m, Neil has transformed an encouraging season into a breakthrough campaign.
Neil also gained valuable international exposure earlier this year when he represented India in the men's 4x100m relay at the World Athletics U-20 Championships in Eugene.
Running the anchor leg, he helped the Indian quartet finish sixth in its heat with a time of 41.01 seconds. Although India did not advance to the next round, the experience offered the young sprinter an opportunity to compete against international opposition and understand the demands of championship-level athletics.
For a 17-year-old still developing his abilities, such exposure can be an important part of the journey towards higher levels of competition.
What makes Neil's performances particularly encouraging is the combination of progress, consistency and versatility. He has improved his personal bests, broken national records and demonstrated his ability to compete in both the 100m and 200m.
His 21.03-second run in the 200m represents a substantial leap from his previous best, while his 10.45-second performance in the 100m confirms his growing speed over the shorter distance.
Two national records and two personal bests at the Junior Nationals have made this a championship to remember for the young sprinter.
At 17, Neil Samraj is still at an early stage of his athletic journey. There is plenty of development ahead, but his performances in Chennai have provided an exciting glimpse of what he could achieve in the years to come.
For now, the young Tamil Nadu sprinter has delivered a clear statement: Indian junior sprinting has a new record-breaker to watch.
