The Indian men's cricket team could be among the athletes housed on a cruise ship during the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, but claims that the BCCI has already finalised such an arrangement need some qualification.
The unusual accommodation plan has emerged amid wider concerns over the Games' decentralised housing arrangements, with no conventional Athletes' Village being built. The BCCI has raised concerns with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), particularly over room-sharing, while also making it clear that it is prepared to make its own arrangements if required.
Here's what is confirmed, what has been reported and what remains unclear ahead of the Games.
Why is there a cruise ship at the Asian Games?
Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will not have a traditional Athletes' Village. Instead,
organisers are using a combination of hotels, temporary accommodation and the Costa Serena cruise ship at Nagoya Port.
The decision was driven partly by accommodation capacity. The Games were originally planned around approximately 15,000 athletes and officials, but registrations have risen beyond that figure, with reports putting the number at more than 17,000.
AINAGOC, the local organising committee, has confirmed that it had accommodation arrangements for up to 15,000 people under the Host City Contract and has been working with the Olympic Council of Asia and National Olympic Committees to accommodate the additional participants.
The Costa Serena is intended to function as a floating Athletes' Village and has previously been listed as accommodation for around 4,600 athletes and officials.
So, the cruise ship itself is not a last-minute improvisation specifically for Indian cricketers. It is part of the broader accommodation model for the Games.
What is the BCCI objecting to?
The BCCI's main reported concern is room-sharing.
The board has appealed to the IOA to ensure that two players are not placed in the same room. Reports have also said the Indian men's team is set to stay on the cruise ship, while the women's team will be accommodated in a hotel.
However, this is where the picture becomes less definitive.
The Japan Cricket Association has said cricket teams are being offered hotel accommodation and that participating teams can also make their own accommodation arrangements if they are not satisfied with the options provided through the Games system.
That means the reported cruise-ship stay should not necessarily be read as a compulsory arrangement imposed on the Indian team.
The BCCI has also not publicly confirmed that the men's squad will definitely spend the entire Games on the Costa Serena.
What has the BCCI said?
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has played down the suggestion that the board is facing an immediate accommodation crisis.
Following a review meeting in Mumbai, Saikia said the board was confident about the arrangements and would intervene if necessary.
He also indicated that the BCCI was prepared to establish its own system to ensure players and support staff received suitable facilities.
That is important because it suggests the board's position is less about rejecting the Asian Games' accommodation model outright and more about retaining control over the standards provided to India's players.
The Indian Olympic Association has also said it is working through the logistical complications, with BCCI expected to check the accommodation and cricket-specific facilities before the teams travel.
Is the cruise ship arrangement confirmed?
Not completely.
The reported plan is that India's men's team will be housed on the cruise ship, while the women's team will stay in a hotel. But the available information does not establish that this is an irreversible final arrangement.
In fact, the JCA has explicitly said teams have the option of arranging their own hotel accommodation.
So the more accurate description is that the men's team has been reported as being allocated cruise-ship accommodation under the current Games arrangements, while the BCCI is seeking assurances over rooming and facilities and retains the option of making alternative arrangements.
What about business-class travel?
This part of the reported plan is clearer.
The BCCI will pay for the Indian players' airfare to Japan rather than seeking financial support from the Sports Ministry, with the players travelling in business class.
The women's team is scheduled to travel between September 14 and 23, while the men's team is expected to be in Japan from September 21 to October 4.
Why are the accommodation arrangements under scrutiny?
The unusual housing system is ultimately a consequence of the scale and structure of Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
The organisers do not have a single Athletes' Village housing all participants. Instead, athletes are distributed across different accommodation clusters, with some staying in hotels, some in temporary facilities and others aboard the Costa Serena.
The system also has to cope with a registration figure significantly above the 15,000-person capacity originally provided for under the host arrangements.
For cricket teams, the issue is particularly important because squads travel with sizeable support staff and equipment. The IOA has acknowledged that sports such as cricket and hockey require additional storage space because of their large kit bags and equipment.
The cricket venue itself is at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, meaning accommodation, transport and training logistics also need to be factored into the teams' preparations.
What is confirmed about India's Asian Games cricket teams?
India will enter Aichi-Nagoya as the defending champions in both men's and women's T20 cricket.
The men's team will be led by Shreyas Iyer, with VVS Laxman taking charge of the side instead of senior-team head coach Gautam Gambhir. Laxman also guided India to the men's gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games.
Harmanpreet Kaur will captain the women's team, which Amol Muzumdar will coach.
