Danny Rohl expressed satisfaction with his Rangers squad's gritty victory over Hibernian, which propelled them to third in the Scottish Premiership standings. Emmanuel Fernandez scored the only goal in a match lacking clear chances, heading in from Dujon Sterling's cross in the 35th minute. Despite a disallowed goal for offside by substitute Djeidi Gassama, Rangers secured a 1-0 win.
Rangers' triumph was crucial as it moved them within nine points of league leaders Hearts, whom they will face on Sunday. They also have an additional game in hand. Currently, Rangers trail second-placed Celtic by three points, although Celtic has played one fewer match and lost their first three games under new manager Wilfried Nancy.
Rangers demonstrated defensive
resilience, achieving their fifth clean sheet of the season. Warren O'Hora came closest for Hibernian with a header cleared off the line. This defensive solidity was pivotal in securing the win, despite not playing spectacular football throughout the match.
Rohl acknowledged that while the performance wasn't flawless, it was effective. "I am happy today for the group," he told BBC Scotland after Monday's game. "It was not always the nicest football, but we are finding a way to win games. " He emphasised the importance of winning and improving step by step.
The Gers were more aggressive offensively, attempting 19 shots compared to Hibernian's eight. Their expected goals (xG) tally stood at 2.18 against Hibs' 0.39, reflecting their attacking intent despite limited goalmouth action.
Rohl expressed contentment with the points gained but stressed the need for more clinical finishing. "We have five clean sheets now; I'd just like us to be more clinical," he said. The manager remains focused on winning matches while gradually enhancing team performance.
The victory was well-earned given Rangers' superior shot count and xG statistics. Although not every aspect of their play was impressive, their ability to secure clean sheets and seize key moments justified their success.
This result marks a positive turn for Rangers following a challenging start to the season under Russell Martin's leadership. As they prepare to face Hearts next, maintaining momentum will be crucial in closing the gap at the top of the table.
