India's campaign at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup is only one game old, but the opening clash against USA has already triggered important tactical discussions. With the top order faltering early in that match, the idea of promoting Rinku Singh in the batting order has gained traction.
Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel believes flexibility will be key, even as he maintains that India should not abandon their aggressive philosophy.
Rinku as the Crisis Manager
Patel was clear in his assessment that Rinku offers a valuable alternative if India find themselves in early trouble again.
"Yes, Axar has rightly played the role of stabilising the innings for India in white ball cricket. But for me, if three wickets fall early or a similar situation arises again in this World Cup,
I would prefer Rinku Singh to come in ahead of Shivam Dube and Axar Patel. He is someone who can rotate the strike well, take his time, and then unleash himself," Patel said.
In India's only outing so far, early wickets meant the middle order had to consolidate rather than attack. Rinku, often labelled a finisher, has shown he can adapt to different phases of the game. His ability to absorb pressure and accelerate once set makes him a strong candidate for a floating role.
Backing the Openers Despite the Collapse
While discussing the top order struggles, Patel urged India not to retreat from their high risk, high reward blueprint.
"India should not change their approach at all. Going into this World Cup, India had a philosophy of playing high risk, high reward cricket. Yes, it did not work against the USA, who were very well prepared against Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan," he observed.
Patel highlighted how Abhishek Sharma thrives when bowlers pitch around the stumps, allowing him to clip deliveries over square leg or create room for elevation. However, wider lines forced him away from his scoring zones. On Ishan Kishan, Patel added that bowlers would continue targeting him with fuller deliveries to deny him the elevation he seeks in the powerplay.
The message was clear: tactical tweaks may be necessary, but India's core identity must remain intact.
Suryakumar's Plan B on Display
Patel also praised captain Suryakumar Yadav for adapting to conditions when the surface did not allow immediate dominance.
"Suryakumar Yadav showed a lot of maturity in that innings because it was not your typical Wankhede surface. You had to give yourself a bit of time and make sure you were taking those singles before playing the big shots," Patel noted.
He pointed out that until the 15th over, the innings featured more calculated strokes along the ground rather than extravagant hitting. "On that kind of wicket, especially if you are 77 for six, you have to adapt and move to Plan B. Suryakumar Yadav executed his Plan B really well," he said.
That adaptability is precisely why promoting Rinku could complement India's strategy. If Suryakumar anchors from one end, Rinku's ability to rotate strike and rebuild partnerships could prevent further collapses.
Siraj's Point to Prove
Patel also reflected on Mohammed Siraj stepping up in the absence of Harshit Rana.
"Mohammed Siraj is someone who likes the big stage and the limelight. There was also a point to prove, as Harshit Rana was playing ahead of him. He got his opportunity due to injury and understood quickly that the six to eight metre length is wonderful in white ball cricket," Patel explained.
He further clarified that while Siraj performed well, "Bumrah walks in place of Mohammed Siraj" if Jasprit Bumrah is fit, underlining the competition within the squad.
Flexibility Without Panic
India have played just one game in the tournament, and sweeping changes would be premature. However, Patel's comments suggest that tactical flexibility rather than structural overhaul is the way forward. Promoting Rinku Singh in specific match situations could strengthen India's middle overs without compromising their finishing power.
As the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 progresses, India's success may depend not just on explosive starts but on their ability to respond calmly when plans go awry. In that equation, Rinku Singh's promotion could emerge as a subtle yet decisive masterstroke.
