Lewis Koumas came off the bench to rescue Wales with a late header in a 1-1 draw against Ghana in Cardiff. The friendly saw Wales strike in stoppage time after trailing from the 66th minute, while Ghana completed their final World Cup warm-up without securing victory.
The match carried long-term storylines for both nations. Wales again struggled to turn control into wins, continuing a poor run in friendlies. Ghana, already drawn into England’s group for the upcoming World Cup, used the game to test depth and shape before facing Panama on 17 June.
Koumas’ equaliser was his first senior international goal and arrived on his 11th appearance for Wales. The strike came 17 years and 286 days after Jason Koumas scored his last goal for the country against
Georgia in 2008, adding a strong family link to the late Cardiff drama.
Introduced in the 60th minute, Koumas quickly became a key threat. The forward registered three attempts, a total surpassed only by Dan James, who hit the woodwork twice. Koumas’ decisive moment came in the third minute of stoppage time, meeting Neco Williams’ precise right-wing cross with a well-directed header beyond goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
Jordan Ayew reached a landmark by making a 120th appearance for Ghana, drawing level with Andre Ayew as joint record appearance holder for the Black Stars. The occasion, however, again highlighted Ghana’s troubles away to European opposition, with the side still searching for a first win on such trips.
Data underlined that theme, as Ghana’s record against European hosts remained without a victory across 18 matches. Their sequence now stands at seven draws and 11 defeats. That statistic was captured during the game by Opta, alongside the late blow of Koumas’ leveller for Wales.

The scoring had opened when Ghana struck midway through the second half of a largely controlled but quiet contest. Substitute Caleb Yirenkyi first hit the post from close range after firm work by Ernest Nuamah, whose shot drew a save, before Yirenkyi reacted quickest to force the rebound over the line.
Wales vs Ghana: Friendly form, Semenyo omission and next fixtures
Wales’ result extended a difficult pattern in friendly matches. Craig Bellamy’s side have now managed only one win in their last 12 friendlies, recording seven draws and four defeats. They are winless in six such games since a 4-0 victory over Gibraltar in October 2023.
This calendar year has also started slowly for Wales. The team have failed to win any of their first three matches, all ending as draws. That mirrors a sequence last experienced in 2016 under Chris Coleman, when the national side opened the year with one draw and two defeats.
Carlos Queiroz chose to leave Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo among the substitutes, despite Semenyo being seen as Ghana’s standout name. Semenyo has scored once in the last 27 international appearances, and Queiroz did not introduce the attacker while facing Wales for the first time as a coach.
The draw leaves different priorities for the two squads. Wales now prepare for another friendly, against Romania on Saturday, as Bellamy continues experimenting after missing World Cup qualification. Ghana turn full attention to World Cup planning, building from this performance towards their Group L opener against Panama on 17 June.
