As the IPL 2026 auction hype builds, all eyes are on proven finishers who can turn games in the death overs. With the mega auction set for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, teams are strategizing around retained
players and massive purses.
South African powerhouse David Miller, known for his explosive batting and clutch performances, is generating buzz. The 36-year-old left-hander boasts an IPL career strike rate of over 140, with memorable six-hitting displays for Gujarat Titans, including their 2022 title-winning knock.
Speaking on JioStar's 'TATA IPL Auction Most Wanted' show, JioStar expert and former India coach Sanjay Bangar highlighted why Miller could command a top-three price tag, and KKR can be in the mix to sign the South Africa star.
"David Miller will likely be among the top three most expensive players in this auction. Several teams need a player with his finishing ability - Gujarat Titans, for instance, would benefit from his experience, while Kolkata Knight Riders could target him too, especially with Andre Russell's retirement and a healthy purse at their disposal. "
Bangar's take underscores Miller's value in a finisher-starved market, where power-hitters like him are rare.
Kolkata Knight Riders enter the auction with the biggest purse after releasing Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell. KKR's death-over firepower has been inconsistent post-2024, and Miller's ability to clear boundaries under pressure fits perfectly.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, fresh off a record-breaking batting approach in recent seasons, crave stability beyond their top order. Despite retaining Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, SRH's 2025 campaign exposed vulnerabilities in the slog overs. Miller can be a perfect player for them to hone the finisher role and his rich IPL experience will be an added benefit.
Bangar also predicted KKR's potential move for Jonny Bairstow, who will be available for the entire tournament. After a brief stint with Mumbai Indians in 2025, the Englishman is up for grabs in the mini auction.
"Jonny Bairstow offers dual value as a wicketkeeper and a top-order batter. He has a proven pedigree and, since he's currently focused solely on T20 cricket, his full availability makes him an even stronger prospect. Teams like Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders could be in the mix," he added.
