In the picturesque district of Kollam, known for its lush coconut trees and tranquil backwaters, a new natural wonder has emerged, painting the landscape with a brilliant hue of yellow. Vast fields of sunflowers
in areas like Thazhava and Kadappuzha have recently captured the attention of both locals and tourists, transforming the region into a sought-after destination. These captivating floral displays not only provide a refreshing visual treat but also serve as an ideal setting for capturing stunning photographs and creating engaging social media content, such as short-form video reels. The unexpected burst of color has added a new dimension to Kollam's already serene beauty, attracting visitors eager to experience this blooming phenomenon firsthand and share its charm online.
Inspired by Global Gardens
The vision for these enchanting sunflower fields was cultivated by Aji Tharayil, a farmer from Kadapuzha, West Kallada panchayat. His journey into agriculture, particularly sunflower cultivation, was inspired by his experiences abroad. While working in Dubai, Aji was deeply impressed by the meticulously maintained Miracle Garden, a testament to the possibility of creating breathtaking floral displays even in challenging climatic conditions. This awe-inspiring sight sparked a desire within him to replicate such beauty in his hometown of Kollam. Upon his return after the pandemic, Aji dedicated himself to agricultural pursuits, initially experimenting with paddy cultivation across four acres. The success of a small sunflower plot the previous year encouraged him to expand, planting sunflowers across one full acre this year, showcasing his commitment to bringing this vibrant agricultural art to his community.
Cultivation and Community
Aji Tharayil's sunflower farm, although partially affected by rain, has largely thrived, showcasing the resilience of these sun-loving plants. Grown using hybrid seeds and nourished with cow dung, the sunflowers are cultivated in a warm climate typically between January and April. Aji embraces an open-door policy for his garden, welcoming visitors to experience the beauty up close, even acknowledging that some minor damage might occur during visits. He emphasizes that the garden is not for commercial gain but is meant to be shared freely with the public. Currently cultivating sunflowers in one acre, Aji harbors ambitions to expand his farm to a significant 10 acres, a vision he aims to achieve with the support of his friends. His ultimate goal is to elevate the region into a prominent tourist attraction, drawing parallels to the popularity of nearby Munroe Island.
A Social Media Magnet
The breathtaking expanse of yellow has rapidly gained traction on social media platforms, drawing an impressive crowd of over 2,000 visitors on weekdays and an even larger influx on weekends. What was once a relatively uncommon sight in Kerala, spotting large sunflower fields has become increasingly frequent. Beyond Kollam, similar vibrant displays have emerged in other parts of the state, including Kattakada and Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram, Bison Valley in Idukki, and Kandanad in Ernakulam. This growing trend highlights a burgeoning interest in sunflower cultivation across Kerala, transforming previously ordinary landscapes into picturesque destinations that capture the imagination of the public and contribute to local tourism.
