Challenging National Security
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vociferously questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's lack of response to a reported threat from Pakistan's defense minister, Khawaja Asif, who allegedly
indicated a potential targeting of Kolkata. Speaking at a rally in Nadia's Bethuadahari, a district bordering Bangladesh, Banerjee expressed her bewilderment at the Prime Minister's silence, especially after he addressed a rally in Cooch Behar. She pointed out that if such statements are made by a neighboring country's defense minister, the Indian Prime Minister should unequivocally condemn them and assure strong action. Banerjee articulated that while Bengal does not seek conflict with any nation, the Prime Minister's reticence on this specific threat, which affects a major Indian city, is perplexing and raises concerns about the government's stance on national security and its ability to protect its citizens from external threats. She contrasted Modi's silence with his public addresses, questioning why he did not address this issue or pledge resolute action during his recent rally.
Border Security and Accountability
Beyond the direct threat, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also drew a parallel between the reported Pakistani statement and the issue of border infiltration, a concern frequently raised by the Prime Minister. She argued that if infiltration is as significant a problem as Prime Minister Modi claims, then the responsibility lies squarely with his government, which controls the borders and central forces. Banerjee asserted that the Prime Minister should demonstrate accountability by resigning if he cannot effectively manage border security. She suggested that the Prime Minister's silence on the Pakistani threat stems from a perception that targeting Bengal is easier for him, implying a lack of courage to confront Pakistan directly. TMC's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, echoed these sentiments, stating that if the INDIA bloc comes to power, they will ensure a strong response to such threats, vowing to retaliate decisively.
