Expressway Incident Details
Nationalist Congress Party (SP) Member of Parliament Supriya Sule was returning to Mumbai via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on a Saturday when the vehicle she was traveling in was involved in a minor mishap.
An SUV, reportedly driven with excessive speed and carelessness, brushed against her car. The incident occurred in the vicinity of the Madap tunnel, under the jurisdiction of the Khalapur police station in Raigad district. While the MP herself was not in the car at the time of the collision, her chauffeur and personal assistant were present and fortunately escaped the situation without any physical harm. This unfortunate event underscores the dangers associated with negligent driving practices on major thoroughfares.
MP's Statement & Safety Plea
Following the incident, MP Supriya Sule took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to share her experience and convey a strong message about road safety. She described the event as an 'awful experience' on the highway, noting that a vehicle with registration number GJ13CF5257 struck her car from the side due to what she termed 'reckless driving.' While expressing relief that everyone involved remained safe, she emphasized the severe risks posed by overspeeding and general negligence on the roads. MP Sule issued an earnest appeal to all road users, urging them to prioritize wearing seat belts, maintain constant alertness, and adopt responsible driving habits to ensure the safety of all commuters utilizing the country's highways.
Official Response & Investigation
Authorities from the Palase Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) confirmed the details of the mishap involving MP Supriya Sule's car. PSI Sanjay Tilekar stated that the incident transpired approximately 29 kilometers before the Madap tunnel, after the vehicle had passed the Khalapur toll plaza. Although MP Sule has not formally lodged a police complaint, the Khalapur police are undertaking a thorough investigation into the matter. Senior Inspector Sachin Pawar of Khalapur elaborated that the SUV responsible for the collision was being driven by an individual from Gujarat, accompanied by friends who were returning from a picnic in Lonavala. The HSP personnel apprehended the SUV driver and his associates at the scene. In response to the offense, the police have initiated a First Information Report (FIR) suo motu against the SUV driver. The charges are filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act, specifically addressing rash and negligent driving that resulted in damage to the Member of Parliament's vehicle.
