Urban Renewal Initiative
The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has set in motion a comprehensive plan to overhaul its older, low-rise residential buildings, replacing them with state-of-the-art high-rise apartment complexes.
This strategic move is in alignment with the Uttar Pradesh Urban Redevelopment Policy-2026, a policy designed to modernize urban landscapes and improve living conditions. LDA Vice-chairperson Prathamesh Kumar has officially instructed officials to develop meticulous proposals for these redevelopment projects. The initial phase of this transformation will concentrate on specific areas, including residential blocks situated on Wazir Hasan Road in Hazratganj, alongside housing schemes located in Paper Mill Colony and Sector-G of the Kanpur Road Scheme. This initiative signifies a forward-thinking approach to urban development, aiming to address the challenges posed by aging infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents.
Key Redevelopment Sites
The Wazir Hasan Road complex, a structure dating back to 1988, is slated for a significant upgrade. This complex currently comprises four G+3 towers housing a total of 64 flats. While a majority of these units have already been allocated, a few remain either unregistered or unallotted. After nearly four decades, these buildings are now showing signs of wear and tear, experiencing a state of dilapidation. Furthermore, the development has faced issues with encroachments in areas designated for parking and park spaces. In numerous instances, the flats have been occupied by individuals who do not possess the legal authorization to reside there. The redevelopment policy mandates the demolition of these existing low-rise structures and their replacement with multi-storey apartment buildings that will offer superior infrastructure and a wider array of modern amenities. Importantly, all existing allottees will be seamlessly integrated into these new developments, ensuring their continued housing. A parallel redevelopment effort is planned for Sector-G of the Kanpur Road Scheme, which features approximately 1,000 double-storey houses constructed in 1990. A significant portion of these houses are currently occupied without proper authorization. A similar comprehensive review and redevelopment process will be undertaken in Paper Mill Colony, following thorough surveys and detailed inspections.
