Generous Free Seating
A major overhaul in airline operations is being implemented, with a significant portion of seats now mandated to be available without any extra selection charges. Specifically, a minimum of 60% of the
total seats on any flight must be offered to passengers free of cost. This directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is a direct response to widespread traveler dissatisfaction regarding the practice of charging for seat selection, especially when it led to families being separated. The intention behind this rule is to ensure fairer access to air travel and to prevent the burden of additional fees for basic seating arrangements. Airlines will now need to strategically allocate these free seats to ensure broad availability for all passengers.
Families United in Flight
Addressing a long-standing concern for travelers, new guidelines now require airlines to ensure that passengers traveling on the same Passenger Name Record (PNR), typically members of the same family or group, are seated together. The preference is for adjacent seating arrangements, aiming to foster a more cohesive and comfortable travel experience, particularly for those with young children. This rule builds upon previous directives that mandated children up to 12 years of age be seated with a parent or guardian without extra fees, reinforcing the commitment to keeping families together. While the operational nuances of pre-booked seats might present challenges, the overarching goal is to eliminate the distress and inconvenience caused by group separation.
Expanded Passenger Rights
Beyond seating arrangements, the aviation ministry and DGCA are reinforcing a broader passenger rights framework. This includes the prominent display of passenger entitlements in regional languages, ensuring greater transparency and accessibility of information for all travelers. The focus is on enhancing the overall passenger experience by reducing grievances and upholding the highest safety standards. Furthermore, airlines are directed to facilitate the carriage of sports equipment and musical instruments in a transparent and passenger-friendly manner. Clear, unambiguous policies for the transportation of pets are also to be established, signaling a comprehensive approach to improving airline services and passenger satisfaction across various aspects of the travel journey.
