Leopard Captured After Attack
A harrowing incident in Sidhauna village, located approximately 4 km from the North Kheri forest range in Lakhimpur Kheri, has concluded with the capture of a leopard. The animal, identified as an adult
male estimated to be between five and six years old, was responsible for the death of a 7-year-old girl on March 25th. The tragic event occurred as the child was playing in her courtyard, where the leopard seized her. The subsequent capture took place around midnight on Saturday, following intensive efforts by forest officials. Five cages, equipped with live bait, and ten camera traps were strategically deployed to track the predator's movements. This operation involved four dedicated monitoring teams, including seasoned big cat trackers, who maintained a constant vigil, equipped with specialized protective gear to ensure their safety and to effectively observe the leopard's behavior and location.
Animal Declared Healthy
Following its successful apprehension, the leopard underwent a thorough veterinary examination by specialists from the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. The medical assessment revealed that the animal is in good health, exhibiting no apparent injuries or physical deformities. This finding is crucial as it rules out any underlying medical conditions that might have contributed to its aggressive behavior. After being deemed healthy and fit, the leopard was provided with 2 kg of mutton as sustenance. Prior to its capture, there were concerning reports that the leopard had made further attempts to enter at least two other homes on Saturday, with indications that it may have been targeting children. Fortunately, alert monitoring teams were able to intervene and prevent any additional attacks, underscoring the urgency of the capture operation and the potential danger the animal posed to the community.
Relocation for Safety
In light of the leopard's documented history of entering residential areas, its aggressive disposition, and the significant risk of further predatory incidents, a definitive decision has been made by UP's Chief Wildlife Warden, Anuradha Vemuri. The animal will be relocated to the Lucknow Zoo. This move is not only a necessary measure to protect the local population but also a step intended to restore a sense of security and peace to the residents of Sidhauna village, who have been deeply affected by the recent events. The transfer to the zoo will be conducted under careful veterinary supervision, ensuring the animal's well-being throughout the process. The community's apprehension following the tragic event necessitated swift and decisive action to mitigate any future threats, making the zoo relocation a prudent and essential step.
