A Saffron Spectacle
In anticipation of a significant political shift, Kolkata was draped in shades of saffron as the state government offices prepared for the swearing-in ceremony of the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in Bengal.
Ahead of the main event on Saturday, Friday evening saw illumination trials across the city's prominent government structures. The iconic Writers' Buildings, set to become the state secretariat upon completion of its restoration, was notably adorned with thousands of orange rice bulbs, casting a warm glow on its Greco-Roman facade. This visual transformation extended to approximately 48 other government buildings, including the Assembly House, Kolkata Collectorate, KMC headquarters, and Akashvani Bhavan, all scheduled to be lit up in saffron from 5:30 PM on Saturday, marking a visual prelude to the new administration's commencement.
Writers' Buildings Buzzing
Within the historic Writers' Buildings, a whirlwind of activity was in full swing as preparations were made for the imminent arrival of the newly designated Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari. Following his oath-taking ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground and subsequent formalities at Raj Bhavan, Adhikari was expected to make a symbolic visit to the building. A makeshift Chief Minister's Office (CMO) was being rapidly readied on the second floor, as the rooms on the first floor that previously served as the CMO were still undergoing renovation. This section of the building offers a commanding view of Dalhousie Square. While restoration efforts have progressed more significantly on the second floor compared to the first, the urgency to complete the space underscored the importance of the upcoming visit. The CM's office is slated to be fully operational at the Writers' Buildings once the renovation work is finalized, with Adhikari temporarily operating from the Vidhan Sabha. Workers were diligently installing partitions, electrical fixtures, misty fans, and high-capacity air conditioning units, ensuring the space was functional for the new leadership and their cabinet members. The arrival of a prominent chair, presumably for the Chief Minister, further highlighted the imminent transition of power.
Logistics and Security
As the city geared up for this momentous occasion, logistical and security arrangements were meticulously overseen. Senior police officials conducted thorough inspections of the Writers' Buildings and surrounding areas on Friday to guarantee robust security measures for the high-profile event. The plan included a special arrangement for the Chief Minister's arrival; Adhikari was expected to utilize a VIP elevator, with a capacity of 15 people, to directly access the third floor after returning from Raj Bhavan. An adjacent lift would also be operational to accommodate additional staff. The surrounding BBD Bag area was also undergoing sprucing up, with roads being repaved and trees pruned to present a well-maintained facade for the day. There was also the possibility of the Chief Minister addressing the press during his approximately two-hour stay at Writers' Buildings on Saturday, adding another layer of significance to the day's events.
