Pioneering AMR Prevention
Thiruvananthapuram has emerged as a frontrunner in the critical battle against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), showcasing substantial achievements in responsible antibiotic usage. This success is a direct
outcome of the state government's Kerala Antimicrobial Resistance Strategic Action Plan (KARSAP) project. Under this initiative, numerous government health institutions within the district have officially been certified as either antimicrobial stewardship-compliant or antibiotic smart hospitals. This esteemed recognition was bestowed upon them for meticulously adhering to approved standard operating procedures. The city's commitment is evidenced by its excellence in crucial areas like reinforcing infection control systems, actively promoting judicious antibiotic use, conducting thorough prescription audits, providing comprehensive training to healthcare professionals, and diligently raising public awareness about the dangers of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic smart hospitals are defined by their integration of robust antimicrobial stewardship practices alongside effective infection control measures, ensuring a holistic approach to combating infections. Meanwhile, AMS-compliant hospitals achieve a perfect score by demonstrating adherence to all primary care standards. This multifaceted approach signifies a strong, coordinated effort to safeguard public health against the growing threat of superbugs.
Achieving Full Compliance
Within Thiruvananthapuram's healthcare network, four specific institutions have achieved the highest level of recognition by successfully scoring a perfect 15 out of 15 on the established standards. These include the Family Health Centres (FHCs) located in Aruvikkara, Anad, and Kallikkad, along with the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) in Chalai. These facilities have set a benchmark for excellence in antibiotic stewardship and infection control. Furthermore, several other health centers demonstrated strong performance, scoring between 12 and 14 out of 15. This group comprises FHC Karakulam, Thiruvallam, Amboori, Uzhamalakkal, Nagaroor, as well as UPHC Vattiyoorkavu and Kalippankulam. This widespread success across various levels of healthcare facilities underscores the comprehensive and effective implementation of the KARSAP project throughout the district. The consistent high scores and strong performances indicate a deep integration of best practices in antibiotic management and a significant reduction in the potential for antimicrobial resistance to develop and spread within the community. The city's proactive stance on this global health challenge is truly commendable.
