Sultan Bathery town is once again captivated by its beloved bougainvillea plant, which has made a spectacular return in a dazzling array of colors. This iconic plant, a symbol of the town, had been tragically
destroyed by unseasonal summer rains in March 2025, leaving a void in the hearts of residents and visitors alike. For a decade, this towering magenta bougainvillea had stood proudly at the town's entrance, a beacon of beauty and a constant source of delight. Its loss was keenly felt, as it represented more than just local flora; it was intertwined with the town's very identity. The plant's recovery signifies not only botanical resilience but also the deep emotional connection the community shares with its cherished landmarks.
Community-Led Revival
The rejuvenation of Sultan Bathery's iconic bougainvillea was a testament to collective effort and dedication. Following the plant's destruction, the then municipal chairperson, T K Ramesh, spearheaded a determined campaign to restore it, rallying local traders for support. Recognizing that municipal funds were not applicable for such a restoration, Ramesh personally invested approximately Rs 24,000 to stabilize the damaged plant immediately after the incident, hiring a private team for the crucial task. Subsequently, an additional Rs 10,000 was allocated for the grafting of ten different bougainvillea varieties onto the surviving base. This meticulous grafting process was undertaken with the ambitious goal of bringing the plant back to its former glory, and remarkably, about seven distinct colors have already begun to bloom, heralding its triumphant return.
Bathery's Floral Charm
Sultan Bathery is renowned not only for its iconic bougainvillea but also for its consistent commitment to cleanliness and aesthetic appeal. Consistently recognized as one of Kerala's cleanest towns, its streets boast spotless pavements, well-maintained walkways, and an absence of litter, creating a welcoming and fresh ambiance. This pristine environment is further enhanced by the strategic placement of potted plants lining its thoroughfares. The municipality's health department diligently oversees the cleaning operations, typically conducted during the night to ensure minimal disruption. The upkeep of the town's extensive floral displays, including the revived bougainvillea, is a collaborative endeavor, managed jointly by municipal staff and local traders, ensuring that Bathery's vibrant and verdant character is perpetually maintained and celebrated.
