Impact of Gas Scarcity
The shortage of LPG cylinders, reportedly linked to international conflicts such as the situation involving Iran, has emerged at a particularly inconvenient time for Andhra Pradesh's catering sector. With the peak wedding period in full swing and the Ugadi festival on the horizon, caterers are finding it incredibly difficult to source enough cooking gas to prepare the voluminous feasts characteristic of Telugu weddings. These celebrations traditionally feature an extensive array of dozens of meticulously prepared dishes, symbolizing abundance and hospitality. Consequently, numerous catering companies are reporting that the persistent LPG scarcity is compelling them to either drastically reduce their service scale or temporarily halt their operations altogether, adding significant stress to families planning their special occasions.
Adapting with Firewood
In response to the critical LPG cylinder shortage, many catering businesses have begun reverting to traditional cooking methods, specifically utilizing wood-fired stoves, to maintain their operations. However, this transition is not without its own set of considerable challenges. Cooking with firewood is inherently a much slower and more labor-intensive process compared to utilizing LPG, which offers instant heat and precise temperature control. Preparing food for hundreds of guests requires significantly more time, making it arduous to adhere to the tight schedules typically associated with wedding ceremonies. Furthermore, there is a noticeable scarcity of chefs with the requisite expertise to prepare a diverse range of dishes effectively on wood-fired stoves, as many contemporary cooks are trained primarily on gas-based cooking systems, creating a surge in demand for the few seasoned chefs who still possess this traditional culinary skill.

Noted caterer Pujari Ramanjaneyulu highlighted the severe operational difficulties imposed by the current gas crisis, emphasizing the integral role of abundant food in Telugu wedding traditions. He explained that guests anticipate a lavish spread of numerous dishes, and without a reliable LPG supply, preparing these meals punctually becomes an immense hurdle. The shift to firewood cooking, as previously mentioned, demands more time and the availability of experienced chefs, who are now in high demand, further complicating logistics. This scarcity is also directly affecting families organizing weddings. L Sai Mahesh, who is preparing for his upcoming wedding, shared the unexpected difficulty in securing catering services. Many caterers are reportedly refusing new bookings due to the uncertainty surrounding gas availability, creating significant stress for couples and their families just weeks before their ceremonies, highlighting the ripple effect of the LPG shortage on important personal milestones.
