Syllabus Reduction Announced
Education Minister V Sivankutty declared that the syllabus for classes 1-10 in Kerala will undergo a 25% reduction starting from the next academic year. This announcement was made during a presentation
ceremony for the family of Mithun, a student who tragically passed away due to electrocution. The decision stems from long-standing discussions and student feedback regarding the heavy workload and difficulties faced in completing the curriculum. The curriculum committee has already approved the changes, although official procedures are still pending for their implementation.
Addressing Student Concerns
The initiative to reduce the syllabus directly addresses concerns raised by students. According to Minister Sivankutty, the reduction was prompted by feedback from students who felt their school bags were excessively heavy. Furthermore, teachers had expressed difficulties in completing the prescribed portions within the given time. This feedback loop, emphasizing the need for a less demanding curriculum, significantly influenced the decision-making process. The adjustments aim to create a more balanced and manageable learning experience for students across the state.
The Context of the Announcement
The announcement was made during a presentation to the family of Mithun, a student from Thevelakkara Government High School. The event involved the handover of a new house built by the Bharat Scouts and Guides, with a total cost of ₹20 lakh. Finance Minister K N Balagopal also attended the event. The tragic incident of Mithun's electrocution at school on July 17, 2025, added a layer of poignancy to the announcement, highlighting the government’s commitment to student welfare and improved educational conditions.
