Cleaner Air Initiative
A pioneering initiative has been launched in Vijayawada, marking a significant advancement in intercity bus travel within India. This new service focuses on the crucial aspect of air quality inside passenger
cabins, a factor often overlooked during extended journeys. The program aims to enhance the well-being and comfort of travelers by ensuring they breathe purified air throughout their trips. This effort is particularly vital for frequent travelers and those undertaking long-distance routes, where prolonged exposure to potentially compromised air can impact health. The introduction of this technology underscores a growing awareness of passenger health as a key component of transportation services.
Addressing Pollution Concerns
Internal research has revealed a concerning trend: air pollution levels within intercity bus compartments can be alarmingly high, frequently exceeding recommended safety thresholds by as much as two to three times the guidelines set by the World Health Organisation. This finding highlights a critical need for intervention to safeguard passenger health. To combat this issue, a specialized technology has been implemented to continuously measure and regulate the air circulating within the bus. Pilot testing of this system has demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations at approximately 40 µg/m³ for over 90% of travel time. This level is considerably cleaner than the ambient air found in many urban areas across India, offering a significant improvement for passengers.
Innovative Technology Deployed
Travelers journeying between Vijayawada and Bengaluru can now opt for these specially outfitted buses, easily identifiable by the 'SmartBus AQI' tag when booking via the dedicated mobile application or website. During the journey, passengers will have access to real-time data on the Air Quality Index (AQI) and PM2.5 levels, displayed on screens within the bus. This information is also accessible through the mobile app, providing transparency and reassurance about the air quality. The implementation of this technology transforms the travel experience, allowing passengers to be informed and confident about the cleanliness of their travel environment.
Hub for Long-Distance Travel
Vijayawada is rapidly establishing itself as a pivotal center for intercity transit, with substantial demand for lengthy travel corridors, such as the route connecting to Bengaluru. Recognizing this, the new AQI-enabled service is designed to ensure that passengers utilizing these routes can enjoy the benefit of breathing clean, unpolluted air throughout their entire journey. This strategic placement of the service acknowledges the city's importance as a travel nexus and aims to elevate the standard of long-distance bus travel, making it a healthier and more comfortable option for everyone.
