Insurance Scheme Expansion
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared that the state government is actively considering the expansion of its insurance programs designed for expatriates returning to Kerala. This announcement was made
during the closing session of the Loka Kerala Sabha. The government is looking into the possibility of extending the Norka Care scheme to include expatriate returnees and their families. This existing scheme already serves as a comprehensive health and accident insurance plan specifically for those returning to the country. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of the expatriate community. This initiative underlines Kerala's commitment to supporting its diaspora and ensuring their well-being upon their return, acknowledging their contributions and addressing their specific challenges. The move reflects the state's dedication to its citizens abroad and aims to offer a safety net for those who have been working overseas.
Addressing Community Needs
The Chief Minister further mentioned that various suggestions put forth during the Loka Kerala Sabha would be carefully reviewed. These proposals include initiatives such as developing a cultural corridor and skill-development programs. Vijayan emphasized the significance of learning native languages in foreign countries, stating that the Norka Institute of Foreign Languages (NIFL) will offer advanced training in multiple languages. The Pravasi Mission, which focuses on rehabilitation, financial reintegration, and job opportunities, is expected to be inaugurated by February. The government seeks the support of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to enhance investment and skill development for young people in the state. A standing committee has been established to analyze the feasibility of implementing the demands presented at the event. This committee will comprise Norka-Roots directors O B Musthafa and J K Menon, along with NRI representatives from various countries, to ensure comprehensive consideration of the proposals.
Student Migration Portal
The Chief Minister also discussed the recently launched Student Migration Portal. This portal is designed to safeguard individuals from potential scams and fraudulent activities. However, it was noted that a separate program like the Loka Kerala Sabha would not be organized for Malayali students studying abroad. Speaker A N Shamseer highlighted that even the Union government has acknowledged the success of the Loka Kerala Sabha, viewing it as another example of the ‘Kerala model’. The Centre has advised other states to adopt similar initiatives, serving as a fitting response to any criticism of the event. The Loka Kerala Sabha, an initiative aimed at fostering connections and addressing the concerns of the Malayali diaspora, was initially boycotted by the UDF, a political party. This multifaceted approach underscores the Kerala government's dedication to supporting its citizens both at home and abroad.
