What is the story about?
Elon Musk has announced a major hiring push for his newly renamed artificial intelligence unit, SpaceXAI. In a post on X, he said that SpaceX is looking for ‘world-class engineers and physicists’ even if they have no prior experience in artificial intelligence.
“SpaceX is actively hiring world-class engineers/physicists for SpaceXAI, even if you have zero prior experience in AI. Smart humans figure it out fast,” Musk wrote.
Candidates interested in applying have been asked to send an email to: ai_eng@spacex.com. According to Musk, applicants should include around three bullet points highlighting evidence of ‘exceptional ability’.
The hiring announcement comes as Musk reshapes his AI business and expands its computing infrastructure amid the growing global AI race.
xAI renamed as SpaceXAI
The recruitment drive follows Musk’s announcement that xAI will now operate under a new name — SpaceXAI. Musk said the company would no longer function as a separate entity.
“xAI will be dissolved as a separate company, so it will just be SpaceXAI, the AI products from SpaceX,” he said on X.
The rebranding comes shortly after reports emerged about a major agreement involving the company’s Colossus supercomputer.
Anthropic deal reveals massive AI spending
Reports linked to SpaceXAI’s IPO prospectus revealed that Anthropic is expected to pay nearly $1.25 billion per month through May 2029 for access to compute capacity at Colossus.
According to reports, the company’s first-quarter 2026 AI capital expenditure annualises to nearly $31 billion, while revenues are estimated to be around ten times lower.
Colossus is believed to be one of the world’s largest AI supercomputer systems and reportedly operates using more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs.
SpaceX heads for historic IPO
SpaceX is officially preparing to enter the public market in what could become one of the biggest IPOs in history. According to a prospectus filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday, SpaceX plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol ‘SPCX’.
The company had reportedly filed confidential paperwork with the SEC earlier in April, as per a report in CNBC. Reports also suggest that SpaceX is planning to begin its investor roadshow on June 8.
