What is the story about?
Pinterest said on Monday, January 26, it would cut fewer than 15% of its global workforce and reduce office space as part of a board-approved restructuring
in a shift toward Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The image-sharing company expects to incur total pre-tax restructuring charges of approximately $35 million to $45 million, mostly in cash, it said in a regulatory filing. These charges will be excluded from its non-GAAP financial measures, including Adjusted EBITDA.
Pinterest’s latest update shows it has 4,666 employees. With the reduction expected to impact less than 15% of the workforce, up to around 700 employees could be affected.
The company said in a regulatory filing that restructuring is aimed at supporting Pinterest’s transformation initiatives, including reallocating resources to AI-focused roles and teams to drive AI adoption and execution, prioritising AI-powered products and capabilities, and accelerating changes to its sales and go-to-market approach.
While overall staffing levels will decline in the near term, the company said it plans to reinvest in key development areas and strategic opportunities.
Pinterest expects to complete the restructuring plan by the end of its third quarter ending September 30, 2026, subject to local legal and consultation requirements.
The move mirrors a broader trend across the global technology sector, where companies are restructuring operations and cutting roles while redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence and other priority growth areas. Several tech firms have announced similar workforce reductions over the past year as they adjust to evolving market conditions.
