OpenAI is planning to launch its first-ever hardware device in the second half of 2026. This timeline was confirmed on Monday by chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane at Axios House Davos.
The physical product is being developed in collaboration with Jony Ive, the former legendary Apple design chief.
Speaking at an event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Lehane offered a rare glimpse into the secretive hardware ambitions, expecting to present the long-rumoured device within that timeframe.
"We are looking at something in the latter part [of 2026]," Lehane told Axios, adding that while this is the most possible schedule, "we will see how things advance."
Lehane has kept the product's form secret, referring to it as a big coming attraction but stating that he'd have news to share "much later in the year." Though Lehane did not confirm that the device will go on sale this year, he added that

Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that the device will be better than the iPhone, complaining about modern technologies with distractions.
Speaking at the Emerson Collective last year, he said, “When I use current devices or most applications, I feel like I am walking through Times Square in New York and constantly just dealing with all the little indignities along the way — flashing lights in my face…people bumping into me, like noise is going off, and it’s an unsettling thing.”
“I don’t think it’s making any of our lives peaceful and calm and just letting us focus on our stuff,” he added.
He added that the AI device would be more like "sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake and in the mountains and sort of just enjoying the peace and calm," reported TechCrunch.
